Dib frowned at your honesty and rubbed the back of his neck. He was looking forward to a great time with both you and Tak, but his hopes were lost.
"I'm sorry." Your eyes turned to the school's bulletin where endless posters of the dance were plastered. His expression made the empty void in your stomach more hollow.
"I-It's fine, really." He lied.
"We can do something else, how about camping again?" You inquired.
He shook his head, "Tak was really eager to see those crystals and I'd feel bad if I cancelled."
"Wait, so you were only going because of her?" You pressed. You didn't think he had already cared so much about her wants.
"All of us, actually." He blushed. "I wanted all of us to see it and...there was another surprise but it wouldn't be much of a surprise if I told you."
Surprise?
"Dib, (Name)! I'm ready." Came a silky voice. Tak jogged over to the two of you with a small backpack on her shoulders.
Her smile faltered seeing your glare and Dib's frown. She rubbed his back in concern and reached out to grab your shoulder, but you stepped back. She didn't mind this and put her unoccupied hand on his arm, pressing her plentiful chest against him.
"What's wrong?" She soothed. In an instant, Dib smiled at her at her comfort and told her of his disappointed mood.
You found yourself digging your nails further in the straps of your backpack. Her sweet nature towards Dib was supposed to further your likability for her, but it didn't. It didn't make you want to smile at her or feel better that she was being nice. You didn't show much care like her, but you did show care in your own way and that always made Dib smile.
Why was her way wrong to you? Was it because when you did it, nobody else got so therefore making it special between you and Dib or was it the heart melting smile you received in the end?
The same smile he was now offering her. His cheeks heated up more than a red rose in Spring as her porcelain skin made contact with his. Her silver eyes with a mischievous glint looked over to you.
"Is there a problem?" She asked with a perfectly arched brow raised.
Your cheeks flushed realizing that you were overthinking a simple cave mission. Yeah, Dib cared about making her happy, but it proved how selfless he was. You admired that about him.
"Listen, I understand that these crystals are important but I don't think it's a good idea to go." You stated.
"Why not?" Tak's eyes narrowed. Her voice wasn't it's usual smooth-as-honey tone. Those two sentences uttered from her rose petal lips came out in a vicious manner like a threatening snake.
"It's not safe." You responded. "Why do you think so many people have failed? The rare crystal that supposedly in there isn't worth the 28% risk of, as Ms.Bitters would say, doom."
You unhooked your arm from one strap of your backpack and pulled out a printed paper. The uneasy sensation in your stomach lingered until you got home the previous day. So, you decided to relieve your paranoia by doing what Dib did. You researched more about the cave and found dozens of past news articles about it. Many of them turned out to have the same warnings and information.
The rare crystal that resided along the topaz ones, was an ultimate rarity. Before it's showcase in a museum, theifs or even company owners all around have tried to steal it for their own benefit of creating lasting technology that would enslave the minds of their buyers just to keep their wallets full of cash.
It was hidden by the government and tucked away from humanity because it had too much power that could corrupt millions. Unfortunately, it's existence would always be known. However, people stopped trying to find it after rumors and speculation about it's power were turned into myths and jokes.
"You found out all this by one page of an old book and the internet?" Dib stared at you in awe, handing you back your papers.
"Well I did learn some techniques from the best." You smiled.
"You really were paying attention." He said softly.
Tak looked in between the both of you and clasped her hands together. She draped an arm back around Dib's shoulder.
"While I am impressed with this cute moment of yours (Name), I actually have made a safety system. My dad bought us equipment yesterday so we're going to be just fine, really." She exclaimed. "I mean those news articles are so outdated anyway."
"It's sad you won't be with us, right Dib?" She gently turned his chin to meet his gaze. There was a flash of longing and passion in her eyes as she stared in his own.
Why is she so eager to be around him? You narrowed your eyes at her. You turned to Dib and furrow your brows at his dazed and hazy expression. Or is the feeling mutual?
He didn't look at you as his gaze was drowned in Tak's. "Yeah." He briefly looked at you, "We can go camping some other time. These crystals are important."
Dib likes Tak. It wasn't just about making her happy anymore. Not when he was looking at her with so much heartfelt expressions. The way he talked about her in fascination. And now that you weren't going to be there with them, it furthered his chances to spend time alone with her. A perfect way to make his chances of getting the girl of his dreams.
Tak, a beautiful edgy girl with the same interests as him. The girl who wasn't afraid to seize the moment when she had one.
"Fine. Have fun." You turned and walked away from them. Your stomach churned in an upsetting way, but for now you suppressed those feelings. Sure, the way she was absolutely breathtaking.
But deep down, there was something to be uncovered that wouldn't be as beautiful. You knew that well from a certain person in your past. And as much of a dream girl Tak was, there was a reality that would wake Dib up.
Except this time, you were going to do something about it. This time, you were going to use the clues that were right in front of you and take advantage of them. And this time, you weren't going to be alone.
