chapter ten ~ the one with new year's
Joey's POV

Winter was here and New York was colder than ever before with freezing temperatures and frost covering the windows. It truly was a festive time of year. Christmas had been and gone, as the friends spent time with their families over the holiday and had now returned for a celebration of New Year's with the people that they cared about. What Rachel didn't realise was that New Year's was only a time for celebration for the people that were in happy relationships; it was the worst holiday in the world for people who were single; some even believed that it was worse than Valentine's Day. She was happy because of her blossoming relationship with Paolo and didn't see that her friends were all miserable. Most of them were miserable because they were single but none of them really noticed how miserable Heather was, and she was supposed to be in a happy long-term relationship.

"Hey, do you guys know what you're doing for New Years?" Rachel questioned her friends who were all sat in Central Perk but when they all started complaining she took back her question. "Jeez, what is wrong with New Year?"

"Nothing for you, you have Paolo. You don't have to face the pressures of this holiday, the desperate scramble to find anything with lips, just so you have somebody to kiss when the ball drops!" Chandler talked very loudly and it felt like the whole coffee house were now listening to their conversation. "Man, I'm talking loud."

"Well, for your information, Paolo is going to be in Rome this New Years. So, I'll be just as pathetic as the rest of you."

"Yeah, you wish."

"It's just that I am sick of being a victim to this Dick Clark holiday." Chandler proposed a new idea that would stop them from being single and miserable for New Year's. "I say, this year, no dates. We make a pact, just the six of us. Dinner."

Heather frowned after hearing the number six because obviously they weren't including her in the mix for this dinner. "What about me?"

"Well, you have Carl, aren't you spending New Year's with him?" Monica asked, making her nervous about the whole thing.

The truth was that the couple hadn't been spending much time together once again and were drifting further apart than they were before. Their biggest argument had occurred when Carl told her that she couldn't spend time with her friends anymore, she had lied to him for Thanksgiving about what she had been doing but when he returned, she continued to spend time with her friends. He was in work all day and most of the night anyway and when he got home, they never spoke because neither of them was interested in what the other had been doing all day. Once again, Carl was working over a holiday and told her that he had to go to Chicago on business but she didn't know what to believe. It seemed like all he was doing was going on business trips and she didn't think that was normal; even as a Manager, you wouldn't be expected to go on all these trips. Something wasn't adding up but she was too scared to confront him about it.
