chapter twenty three ~ the one with the jealousy
Heather's POV

After the birth of Ben, things had calmed down a lot, probably because we were all getting used to the idea that Ross had a son and that still didn't feel real. Now that the baby was here, he had worked out a routine with Carol and Susan, so that he would be able to spend time with his son and there was obviously time within that routine that we would also get to spend with the baby. I couldn't wait to babysit him and watch him grow up which was going to be really special but also kind of weird because I had never been interested in watching a baby grow up before. Either way, we were all excited about spending time with the baby, even though every time we talked about it, Monica would cry.

Today was a special day, well, according to one person in particular because it was Rachel's birthday and we decided to have a super low-key party in the apartment to celebrate. The only person missing from the event was Ross, because he was going on a business trip to China or something; I didn't really pay attention when he told us because whenever he talks about his job, I immediately shut off. Monica had organised everything and was cooking Rachel's favourite food, burgers, so that we could all enjoy spending some time together. But all I could focus on was the girl that Joey had brought with him to the party, Melanie, the most irritating date he could have brought.

"What's wrong with you?" Monica whispered to me as I leant against one of the counters, watching as Melanie talked to Rachel.

"Nothing, I'm fine."

She followed where I was looking and realised what was wrong. "Why don't you like Melanie?"

"What? I do like her, I didn't say I didn't like her, why would you think that?" I blurted out, running a hand through my hair as I tried to defend myself.

"Honey, it's really obvious. Did she say something to you?" She crossed her arms and stood slightly in front of me so that I wasn't glaring at the annoying woman again.

"No, she didn't say anything to me. I just, there's something about her that's just annoying me."

She sighed. "Is it maybe the fact that she came here with Joey and you're jealous?"

"What? Of course not, I'm not jealous of her. Why would I be? Joey and I are just friends."

"Just friends? I'm not stupid, Heather, we've all seen the way that you act around each other, you're not just friends."

I shook my head. "Nothing is going on between us. I swear, we're just friends and we'll always be just friends. I'm not jealous of Melanie because of her date. Maybe it's the fact that all she talks about are her gift baskets? Yes! That's it, I don't like her because all she talks about are her stupid gift baskets!"

"I thought you said you did like her?" Monica raised an eyebrow, which just caused me to stutter because once again she had managed to catch me off guard and make me admit something that I had rejected. Instead of pushing me more on the topic, she just turned to face everyone else to carry on with the celebrations and left me with my mouth gaping. "Okay, how does everyone like their burgers?"
