chapter forty five ~ the one with the surprise party
Heather's POV

With so many friends, it was obvious that we would have to hold some kind of party when it was one of their birthday's; the guys weren't that bothered about parties although Joey did love the balloons. When it was Ross' birthday, we just bought him tickets to a convert and he was happy but when it came to some of the others, they needed a big surprise party otherwise they wouldn't be satisfied. Monica demanded that she has the best surprise party that a person can have, but she ruins the surprise part of the party by organising everything herself, down to the final touch. This time it was Rachel's birthday and we had organised a surprise party for her, we had even invited her Mom to attend because they hadn't seen each other in a while. Monica had everyone running around the apartment to make sure that the party was perfect, luckily, I hadn't been around for some of the prep and she had just asked me to do final checks on everything.

Doing the final checks literally meant that I was free for the evening because Monica had everything under control but I didn't dare say anything out loud otherwise she would probably kill me. The friends that knew about the party and were helping to get everything ready had already gotten dressed in their outfits as they helped decorate the apartment so that everything would look perfect when Rachel arrived. I was hanging one of the banners above the front door as Chandler and Joey continued blowing up balloons which we were tying to any surface that we could reach. Monica had given herself the role on food duty and was taking some of her delicious tasters out of the refrigerator.

"Okay, here are the Birthday candles." Phoebe said, taking something out of her purse and turning to Monica. "Where's the Birthday cake?"

"We're not having Birthday cake. We're having Birthday flan."

Everyone snapped their heads in her direction, but it was Chandler who actually questioned her because that was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard. "Excuse me?"

"It's a traditional Mexican custard dessert." Monica explained as she set down a plate of this 'Flan' on the table and we all leaned forward to inspect the dessert.

"That's nice. 'Happy Birthday Rachel. Here's some goo!'" Joey complained as we all agreed that this wasn't what anyone would want for their birthday.

Monica was about to argue with us when there was a knock at the door, I don't think I had ever been more grateful for someone interrupting us because one more minute and we'd have all been dead. I abandoned my banner and moved over to the table to help the boys with the balloons because I didn't really want to get dragged into whatever discussion Monica was going to have with the person at the door, she wasn't in the best mood right now and whoever it was would just make her angrier. "Dr Green? Oh my God, it's Rachel's Dad! What are you doing here?"

By the look on Monica's face, she was panicking and by the looks on our faces, that meant we were panicking too. Rachel's Dad wasn't supposed to be here because we hadn't invited him to the surprise party. We had invited her Mom and the reason why we didn't invite both of them was because they were in a rough space in their marriage, and by that, I mean that they were going through a divorce and we didn't want the night to turn into a battle of the parents. We wanted Rachel to enjoy her birthday without having to watch her parents argue the entire time, but now that he was here, he was ruining the whole plan.
