chapter seventy one ~ the one with his girlfriend
Heather's POV

Slow dancing on a rooftop with Joey was the highlight of my life. My hands were shaking, my legs were wobbly and my breathing was irregular the entire time but I wouldn't change a thing about it because it was perfect. I knew that my crush was growing by the second but the moment that we shared just eluded that he felt the same way, maybe things were finally looking up for me. I had the perfect job, something that I had been working towards for a long time and my mentor didn't seem to hate my guts anymore. Now, I was getting the relationship that I had read about in Fairy tales; it was perfect and it made sense. Joey and I had always been close out of all of my friends, he was the person that I could go to whenever I needed to open up about anything; it made sense that we would eventually end up together and as I made my way over to his apartment, I couldn't help but skip slightly just thinking about how happy this made me.

Not even bothering to knock the door, I stepped into the apartment, expecting to see Joey waiting for me like everything was part of a fairy tale but instead I walked in to find a girl sat behind the counter by herself. My brain instantly decided that she must have spent the night with Chandler, because there was no way that she would have been here with Joey but then I remembered how unlike my brother that would be and my heart almost broke in half. My hearing went all mix-matched as I tried to process what was going on and I didn't even notice the girl getting out of her seat to help me. She wasn't making me feel any better, especially not when I noticed that she was wearing one of Joey's sweaters; she was making it worse and I tried to get away from her but she kept following me.

"Heather? What's going on?"

I couldn't thank Chandler more in that moment, thank God, he had come out of the bathroom when he did because if this girl had tried to touch me one more time then I would have killed her. I didn't know who she was but she was obviously linked to Joey and that meant that they had sex last night and I didn't want her to touch me, I didn't want her anywhere near me. It wasn't her fault; she didn't know what had happened between us on the rooftop but then my mind turned to what had happened. If Joey had slept with this girl last night then obviously our slow dance in the dark hadn't meant anything to him; this time my heart did break because I realised that I had read all the signs wrong. He wasn't even interested in me, and here I was thinking that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. And even when I was going through these emotions, Joey was nowhere to be seen; all I had was this random girl and Chandler, who was still worrying about why I had almost passed out in his kitchen.

"Get her to sit down, I'll grab her some water." The girl instructed as my brother led me to one of the armchairs and she went into the kitchen.

Reluctantly I sat in the chair and pulled Chandler down to my height. "Who is that?"

"Kathy, she's Joey's girlfriend."

Now it felt like my heart had been broken and someone was dancing all over the broken pieces because if I wasn't hurt before, now it felt like I had been crushed under a never-ending truck. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, this random girl had somehow caught the attention of Joey and had pushed me straight out of the picture. Now I was realising how stupid I had been, to think that we would ever be more than friends. Joey didn't feel the same as I did and I was foolish for believing that we could be anything more than what we were now.
