chapter fifty four ~ the one with the parents
Heather's POV

I don't think I've ever been this nervous in my life. It had started as a normal day when I was hanging out with my friends and we were going to see a movie but when I got back to my apartment that afternoon, everything had been turned on its head. Nick was waiting outside my apartment, in the hall, and invited me to come to dinner with him this evening. That doesn't sound too bad, I thought that it was super sweet and was more than ready to accept the invitation, so I did; only after I told him that I would come, did he drop the bombshell on me. It wasn't just a normal dinner; it was dinner with his parents. I was going to meet his parents for the first time and I was terrified. What if they didn't like me? What if they were horrible and I didn't like them? What made me feel even worse was that Nick told me that they'd flown here specially to meet me, why did he have to tell me that? That just made me even more nervous for tonight to go well.

Finding the perfect outfit was the first step to tonight being a success and that was what I had spent the rest of the afternoon doing. I had eventually decided to be as classy as possible, Nick told me that they were both doctors and therefore must be quite well-kept; that meant that tonight I needed to be as polite and well-mannered as possible to make a good first impression to them. I wanted them to like me because if they didn't then that could be the end of my relationship with Nick and I didn't want that to happen. The dress that I chose was a dark purple, it was quite tight but long enough so that it covered me suitably and I had a pair of black heels that would look good with it. I kept my hair down but straightened it, pinning some loose strands back to keep them off my face and trying to look as natural as possible.

Nick knocked on my door on time and we walked over to the restaurant which wasn't far away from our apartment building. We had our arms linked together to try and keep warm because it was wintery now and colder outside than it had been; I was wearing a warm coat but I wasn't good with this season and was always colder than everyone else was. It probably wasn't just the cold that was making me shiver as I was getting more nervous the closer that we got to the restaurant. Nick wasn't the best at calming nerves as he didn't see what the big deal was, he just talked about his day in work and didn't ask me about how I was doing at all. He didn't understand the nerves because he hadn't had to meet my family yet, and even if he did, they're not the type of people that would intimidate you. In fact, I was probably more nervous about my parents meeting my boyfriend than the other way around.

"Nicholas! There you are!" A feminine voice called as we were led into the restaurant and shown to a table where two people were getting up to greet us.

Nick reached up to kiss his Mother on both cheeks and then moved to shake his Father's hand. I was stood slightly behind him, wondering if he was going to introduce me or if he had already forgotten about me as he seemed so excited to see his parents. His Mother noticed me first, looking me up and down, judging me silently and I was quickly regretting what I was wearing because even though there was nothing wrong with it; she made me feel as though there was something wrong with it. She tapped her son's shoulder and reminded him that he hadn't come alone, he smiled as he remembered that I was with him and stepped back to stand next to me; placing his hand on the small of my back and gently pushing me towards his parents.
