chapter seventy five ~ the one with confessions
Joey's POV

Now that Thanksgiving was over and things started to go back to normal, all of the friend returned to their normal lives and tried to act as if the craziness of the holiday hadn't affected them. Chandler was now happily in a relationship with Kathy and even though Heather didn't completely agree with them being together, she was also happy that her big brother was happy. Plus, now that Kathy and Joey were no longer together, that meant that she could spend more time with him without being in trouble with his girlfriend. Their bond was once again growing, it had dipped several times since they first met and usually that was when one of them was in a relationship but now that they were both single and focusing on their careers, it gave them the chance to spend time together as friends.

Today, they both finished work and had agreed to meet at the apartment before doing something fun together. Heather had no idea what they were planning to do because usually when they said that they were going to have fun together, it would end with ordering pizza and playing videogames in the apartment. But what she didn't know was that Joey had a plan, he didn't know exactly how well the whole thing was going to work but he had something in mind and could only pray that it would go the way that he wanted it to otherwise he would be back to square one. Chandler and Kathy were going out for the evening, so he knew that they wouldn't interrupt anything but just to be sure, he wrote another one of his notes. When Heather walked into the apartment and found that no one was there, she thought that it was a prank and someone was going to jump out and scare her but she was surprised to see a note on the back of the door.

Rooftop in 5 minutes - J

She had butterflies in her stomach as she carefully trudged up the hundreds of stairs that led to the rooftop, a part of her remembering the last time that she had walked up these stairs, when she had no idea what she would find at the top. Once again, she had no idea, apart from the notion that Joey was going to be there, waiting for her and she silently hoped that they were going to slow dance again because that was her favourite memory of the two of them. Her hands were sweating as she used the pole to pull herself up the last few steps because she was once again exhausted from climbing up several flights of stairs but she kept going because she knew that when she got to the top, it would be worth it. Her mind wandered, wondering exactly what this meeting was going to be about because if she got to the top and interrupted Joey with another woman then she didn't think that she would ever move past it.

Thankfully when she got to the top, she could already see him waiting for her and just like before, his smile widened when he recognised her coming out from the shadows. She wasn't wearing anything fancy, whatever blouse and skirt that she had worn to work but to him, she looked stunning. She looked just as beautiful as she did when she got all dressed up for one of their big parties. He was glad that she didn't try and dress to fancy for things because he was the same, right now he was wearing jeans and a sweater, with a big coat over the top because it was November and the nights weren't exactly the warmest now that they were leading up to Christmas. His cheeks were tinted pink as the cold air bit at his skin and he seemed to be shaking slightly but he couldn't tell if it was because of the cold or because of how nervous he was for what was about to happen. Heather stepped up onto the rooftop, taking her time because she was wearing heels and didn't want to fall over in front of him because then she would be more embarrassed than ever before. When she was stood carefully on the ground, she wiped down her outfit and tried to make herself look more presentable but Joey was so in awe of her that he already thought she looked perfect.

"What's going on?" She asked, once again cursing silently when her voice came out shaky and nervous instead of confident and calm; he knew that she was just as nervous as he was and she had no idea what was going on.

He hesitated, wondering if this was the right thing to do or whether he had misread her feelings, maybe he was just interpreting it wrong. "I need to tell you something."

"What is it? Joey, come on, you're scaring me."

"Heather, from the moment that I met you, I knew you were special. I didn't know how special you would become but I knew that you were going to be a massive part of my life. In the past three years, I have watched you become a confident, smart, beautiful lady and I'm so lucky to have been able to spend so much time with you."

Heather was shaking, she couldn't believe what she was hearing and pinched herself because she didn't think it was real. "If you propose then I may pass out."

"I'm not proposing. Not right now. I just want to tell you how I feel, because I feel like I can do that when I'm with you. You're the only person that's ever truly listened to me, the only person who understands what I'm trying to say and doesn't judge me for what I'm feeling. I don't know how I got so lucky to be friends with someone like you."

"You're making me cry, because I feel exactly the same way, Joey." She wiped away a tear that had rolled down her cheek and tried to remain calm even though this was the kind of thing that was screaming at her to freak out about.

"Okay, the point is, you make me happy and safe and comfortable with being me. And I only feel like me when I'm around you." Joey took a deep breath, wondering why it was so hard for him to talk about his feelings when this was the one person that he wanted to talk to them about. "I was wondering if you'd like to go out with me?"

"Seriously? You put in that much effort to ask me on a date?"

"You're a special woman, Heather, I couldn't just ask you out. It had to be special. So, what do you say?"

"I would love to." She finally said, breaking the tension and embracing him tighter than they had ever embraced each other before and when they pulled back, she smiled brightly. "What did you have in mind?"

The date that they went on started as soon as they left the apartment building and headed over to the lighting of the giant Christmas tree, it was crowded full of people so it was the perfect chance for them to spend time together without bumping into anyone that they may know. They had the chance to pretend to be a normal couple for a few hours and enjoy the romance that filled the air as the lights were lit throughout the city. Joey and Heather felt like a real couple and both admitted that they had never felt like this on a first date before, maybe it was because they had known each other for three years but they were comfortable with each other and still had so much to talk about. The main topic of conversation as they walked hand-in-hand through the city was what they were going to tell their friends and because this was so new to them, they decided to keep things quiet. Then if they didn't feel the same in a few weeks and it had just been a fling, they wouldn't ever have to tell anyone; plus, they had seen what had happened to Ross and Rachel after their breakup and didn't want to meet the same fate. That's why they decided that keeping it a secret was their best option, so no one would get hurt.
