Anaya

Faiz remained civil, thank Allah. I was worried that he was going to start an argument with Jamshed Uncle and Neha Aunty for bringing over breakfast.

"You know that Mamma had planned the breakfast for all of us." My husband spoke calmly, looking at his father.

"You didn't tell me that, Jamshed!" Neha Aunty looked at Uncle, looking genuinely surprised.

"It must have slipped my mind." Uncle replied, looking unfazed.

"How about we call Gul Aunty and your sisters to join us?" I suggested, looking at Faiz.

"Sorry, Anaya, but the breakfast is just enough for two people." Neha Aunty looked embarrassed. "We weren't even going to stay, this was just so that you two can eat together peacefully and privately. I'm so sorry...I didn't mean for us to cause any problems."

Faiz's jaw was clenched.

"Listen, Faiz and Anaya," She continued, glancing at each of us in turn. "I'm here because I want to tell you that I genuinely did not mean to divide your family."

"Did you know that Dad was married? Not divorce, not separated, but married?" Faiz's tone was still calm.

Aunty nodded, unable to meet our gazes.

"That's enough for me then." Faiz said. "Thank you for the breakfast, but if it's enough for two, then you two can have it. Anaya and I will be joining Mamma and the girls for breakfast." He took my hand and began to walk me to the door. "You guys can see yourselves out."

"Faiz." I said, softly, as we were out of the door.

"Anaya, please don't try and defend them, okay? After..."

"I was just going to say that we literally don't have anything with us. Not the key card to the suite, not your car keys, my purse or your wallet, or either of our phones." I bit my lip to hide a small smile.

"Oh for the love of..." A chuckle escaped his mouth despite his tense mood. We turned back just as the door to the suite opened and Uncle and Aunty came out.

Without another word, Faiz and I headed back into the suite. I didn't comment on the situation because I didn't know all the details, and also, I could understand Faiz's anger for his mother and sisters. They were all affected by this decision of Uncle's, and not positively either.

"Wow, this is good." I fought the urge to lick my fingers, because the puri channay were so delicious.

"This is my favourite place in Lahore." Gul Aunty smiled brightly, as she scooped some halwa onto her plate.

I glanced out of the window, and down at the older part of Lahore. This restaurant was built near the famous Badshahi Mosque, and the view from the window was the perfect image of Lahore. I was going to miss the hustle and bustle of the city, the rickshaws, the street vendors selling random stuff in random places, the noise, even the smell of fumes from the various vehicles. It was Lahore, my city, my home.

"Bhabi?"

I jumped and looked across the table at Sumaira, who sat beside Rauf. "Sorry, Sumaira. What's up?"

"Halwa?" She offered me the bowl.

"Thank you." I reached for it and it almost slipped. Rauf caught it and handed it to me properly. "Thank you, Bhai."
