Faiz

I fired the lawyer.

I was absolutely fuming, and I knew that I needed someone absolutely brilliant to handle this situation, and my former lawyer didn't even know that Hareem's custody had been granted to Dad till the court hearing.

I did my research, and found a lawyer from one of the top firms of London, a British Pakistani woman around my age, Dua Malik. We were now seated in her office, with a gorgeous view of the city of London.

A tall woman, with a straight bob cut with golden highlights, she seemed like a very professional and dedicated lawyer. "So, let me understand this very clearly. He got the custody of Hareem, even though you basically raised all the kids by yourself," She looked at Mamma. "And he randomly announced to you about his second marriage, during an argument, after which he left?"

Mamma nodded.

"We're missing something here." Mrs Malik, or Dua as she preferred to be called, said. "That makes no sense. How did he win this custody, even if it's just till the court hearing?" She tapped her pen against her notepad. "Aunty, do you think it's possible he fabricated something? Powerful and rich men think that they can use money to twist everything to benefit them. Alas, they can't be more wrong."

Mamma looked at me, before turning back to her. "If you'd asked me when our marriage first broke down, I would have said no. But after how he's trying to take my Hareem away from me, he's capable of anything."

Dua leaned forward in her seat. "At the end of the day, we're all just humans. That's a fact we forget. We're not capable of everything, and even the greatest of empires have an end." She paused. "I think he's delusional if he thinks that his money is going to get him out of the mess he has just created for himself."

"What do you mean? You think he caused problems for himself?" I asked.

"From what you're telling me, Mr Faiz, yes, I do think that." Dua said. "I'm not being overconfident or anything, but it's not going to be hard to find a way to prove who the better parent for Hareem is." She grabbed her smartphone. "Okay, so currently, the hearing is at the end of January, which is more than a month away, right?"

That made Mamma's eyes fill up again as she thought of Hareem being away for more than a month.

"Don't worry, Aunty." Dua smiled reassuringly at her. "Let me handle everything. We have ten days for Christmas, and I'm going to request a hearing before that, on urgency basis, since it's the matter of a minor."

"Yes, but he won't harm her." I pointed out. "So, we can't use that."

"Harm doesn't just included physical, Mr Faiz." She said. "The importance of mental health in this country is very high, you know that. And at this time, a minor is stressed out because she is being torn away from her mother and siblings, people who she wants to be with. She is being forced to live with her Dad, whether he hurts her or not."

"But, will we be able to get an earlier court hearing?" I asked.

"If we can't, I'll quit myself." Dua said, confidently.
