AUTHOR'S NOTE: In the last chapter, Rubab referred to Rida as Appi. This was an error as Rubab is a year older than Rida. I've now amended that error.

Anaya

I have to admit, I was a nervous wreck.

Rubab was Mamma's niece, so I wouldn't blame her if my mother-in-law decided to side with her. It was only natural, right?

Once Faiz left, I returned to the kitchen, where Mamma now sat at the kitchen table, looking tensed, and Rubab stood leaning against the counter, frowning.

"I spoke to your Mom, Ruby." Mamma spoke up, her gaze on the kitchen table. "We've been keeping in touch. Remember that she and I were friends since before she married my brother."

Rubab looked alarmed.

"You didn't run away from the marriage because you were forced into it." Mamma continued. "You ran away because you didn't think the guy was good enough for you, even though you yourself had happily agreed to the alliance."

"I am an inch taller than him, Phupho!" Rubab protested. "I wouldn't even be able to wear heels if we went out together."

"He was a successful, intelligent and a very nice man, and you rejected him because of an inch of height difference." Mamma said.

"He would have developed inferiority complex, Phupho!"

"So why did you make an announcement in front of everyone that you wanted to marry Faiz?" Mamma asked, frowning now.

My eyes widened as I looked at Rubab, feeling rage build up inside me.

"I wanted to get out of that marriage, so I used Faiz's name to do so." Rubab said. "It's nothing like that, Phupho."

"You used the name of my married son?"

My own rage stopped increasing as I realised how angry my mother-in-law looked.

"You made everyone think that you and Faiz both wanted to marry each other!" Mamma's voice rose. "Why would you do that?!"

Because some people would do everything and anything to get out of a situation that they didn't want to be in.

"When I initially spoke to your mother, Rubab, she was angry. She asked me if Faiz was really that unhappy in his marriage that he was now going after you." Mamma looked disappointed in her niece. "Your parents are such disciplined people, Rubab. It's so disheartening to see their daughter lie and manipulate her way through things."

I was seriously surprised by this turn of events.

"You are welcome to stay at my house, Rubab. You're my niece and you have come after a long time, but please remember that there are limits." Mamma warned her. "I won't tolerate anyone creating disputes and issues in the lives of my kids."

How blessed am I to have a mother-in-law like Mamma?

Rubab nodded and walked out of the kitchen, her cheeks red.

Mamma turned to me. "And you!"

I was startled at her firm tone. "Me? What did I do?"

She stood up and walked over to me. "You are absolutely perfect the way you are, so do not think about Rubab's words, okay? I'm giving you a strict warning, Anaya. Do not try and change yourself because of what she said."
