Dania

For a long time, Aqsa and I have planned her wedding to Bhai. We thought it would be exciting to be sisters-in-law.

"We'd practically be like sisters!" Aqsa had said, excitedly.

So when Bhai had chosen a girl from a small town in Lahore, I was not just repulsed but also very disappointed. I'd immediately messaged Aqsa and informed her, but things happened so quickly that there was nothing that we could do.

I'd known Aqsa since Primary School, when we ended up sitting beside each other in the classroom. She was wearing this cool bracelet, even though we were not allowed to wear any in school, and I'd complimented her on it. We became best friends, and we even went to the same university together. She studied Business and Management and I studied Fashion Designing. I planned to start my own brand, and with the Jamshed money and name behind me, it shouldn't be a problem. Aqsa and I planned to work together once she had gotten some experience. She got a job on her own basis, despite me asking Dad for help (naturally, he refused).

"What are you doing?" Hareem confronted me one night, when I was in my room, my back turned towards the door, talking on the phone to Aqsa.

"Do you mind? I'm talking to Aqsa. Go away!" I snapped at her.

"You're chatting rubbish about Bhabi!" Hareem glared at me.

"I'm just telling her the truth." I rolled my eyes, before speaking into the phone. "Babe, I'll call you back. Hareem is being a pain in my backside, as usual." I hung up. "Stop eavesdropping, Hareem, it's a bad habit."

"Stop backbiting, Appi, that's an even worse habit."

"Hareem, leave before I make you regret ever coming in here."

"One day, you will realise that you chose to support the wrong people, Appi." Hareem warned me. "But it might be too late then."

"So, now you are going to give me a lecture?" I sneered. "Your hobbies include getting suspended from school!"

"I would never hurt anyone, certainly not my family." She said. "What you're doing will end up hurting Bhai."

"You'll never hurt anything but a teacher's reputation and their self-respect." I spoke sarcastically.

I grabbed a pillow from my bed and threw it towards her. "GET OUT!"

"Ooh, a pillow! I could have been seriously injured by that!" Hareem gasped, dramatically. "You should be charged for attempted murder." She burst out laughing.

"What's going on here?" Mamma appeared next to Hareem in the doorway. "Dania, why are you shouting?"

"Mamma, she is invading my privacy!" I whined.

"Firstly, talk like a grown up, Dania, and stop whining like a six-years-old kid." Mamma said, firmly. "And secondly, how many times do I need to tell you all to stop yelling at each other like that? Is this a way for educated people to talk?"

I crossed my arms over my chest.

"She's backbiting about Anaya Bhabi." Hareem told Mamma. "She basically called her family gold diggers."

Mamma looked at me, shocked.

"I mean, they did act pretty cheaply." I shrugged. "How eager were they, letting you and Dad pay for everything?"
