Chapter 20

Have you thought about serenading my sister at her window? That might woo her.

I had to read that text message twice to make sure I wasn't reading it wrong because I was having an aneurysm. The aneurysm was more plausible than receiving that text message from Tyler Grayson.

I was sitting on Josh's couch watching The Holy Mountain because Josh was in a weird psychedelic movies' mood tonight, or well, really all the time. And I was just staring at my phone more disturbed by that text than by the movie.

"Who sent you a dick pic?" Josh asked, munching on popcorn.

"What?"

"That's an unsolicited dick pic face if I've ever seen one," he said, pointing to my face.

"Tyler just send me a very weird text," I replied.

Josh frowned, confused. "Tyler?"

"Lexi's brother," I explained.

Josh threw his arms in the air, and in the process some popcorn. "Oh, so you're cheating on me with her brother too. That's just grand."

I rolled my eyes, not impressed with his antics. "Shut up."

"Show me the text." He grabbed my phone before I could argue and read it. "Hmm, well you definitely never tried that."

"Huh uh, yeah, yeah, yeah," I chanted. Like I was gonna do that.

"You've also never tried anything though, so like, maybe just oh, I don't know, telling her you actually like her could, oh I'm just saying something silly here, it could let her know that you like her," Josh said, making a scene.

I knew Josh was right, sort of, but that didn't mean I wanted to admit that out lout. But I was also right. If someone was repeatedly telling you that they didn't like you, suddenly appearing in their room uninvited was not going to win you any brownie points, unless you were Edward Cullen.

"When someone tells you they hate cats, do you ask them if they like Miss Puss?" I tried to argue.

Josh snorted like I had just said one of the most idiotic things he had ever heard in his life. "Why wouldn't they like Miss Puss? Miss Puss is a legend. She's a gracious, ethereal being. She will outlive us all. She knows the mysteries of the mystic."

I ignored his feverish rant. That man and his cat. I pitied the woman or man who would ever try to get in between of them. "I mean, if someone says they hate you, you don't tell they you like them."

Josh grinned. "Why not?"

He was being insufferable on purpose. Okay, so most of the things I had done, or not done in terms of my relationship with Lexi were often wrong. Once again, I could admit this to myself, but I would not say it out loud.

Josh didn't take things too seriously. He did, but like, not really. He was more easy-going than I was, more... well balanced really. I was a drama queen. He was a weirdo that didn't take any hit personally.

Anytime Lexi said bad things about me, to me, I took it to heart, even if I knew it came from a place of her being hurt and needing to hurt other people in the process, even if her observations were wrong.

Everything she did, I took it to heart, I just couldn't help it. I often understood where it came from—she'd been hurt by Alex and her mom, she was worried about her family and her friends. I understood that sometimes the frustration she felt from a situation bled into everything else in her life, even if I had nothing to do with Alex being a complete asshole, or her Mom leaving her.
