Lan Wangji was racing as never before, pushing himself well beyond his limits with no regards for the consequences. All that mattered was to get to Wei Ying as soon as possible. Although he knew the younger boy was alright, as the messenger repeatedly assured them, he still wanted to see him badly, the separation was too long and he knew he could not bear even one more second. He was glad that Lan Xichen urged him to take care of himself, to eat and sleep, otherwise he would have not been able to reach his destination this quickly.
Just as he heard that his husband wanted to see him again, he just flew out of the room and only registered the shout about the younger boy's whereabouts before he took to flight. Before the messenger came, his head was full of thoughts about how the Yunmeng Jiang sect disciple was faring, why did he left him and how was he going to react when they saw each other again.
All his questions and insecurities were now forgotten, he just wanted to see his soulmate and to feel him in his arms. Nothing else mattered, they could discuss everything afterwards.
He was now above Yiling, searching for the biggest inn on the main street; he did not have to look for long, there was Nie Huisang in front of a large building waving at him excitedly. He set down next to him, he could not find any words to ask where exactly Wei Ying was, his patience was wearing thin.
Fortunately, the Qinghe Nie disciple understood and started talking without so much as a proper greeting: "Ah, Second Young Master Lan, Brother Wei has asked for you, I did not expect you this soon. He is in the second room on the right, second floor."
Lan Wangji was already leaving, trying to push around Nie Huisang now that he knew where to go, he would thank the other later. The Qinghe Nie disciple however did not yet finish talking and grabbed his sleeve, determined to not let him go. Before Lan Wangji could pull himself free, the other boy was already talking urgently:
"Second Young Master Lan, please wait a minute. You should know about Brother Wei's condition before you go see him. He is quite vulnerable right now and... I am sorry to say this but he is most probably still afraid of you even if he is now asking for you. We do not know why that is, but please keep that in mind as you approach him. Please do not let him think for a second that you could hurt him or the baby, not with your gestures nor with your words. It would probably also be a good idea to go in without your sword..."
Before Nie Huisang could continue, probably to convince him to leave his weapon somewhere outside of Wei Ying's room, Lan Wangji pushed his sword into his hands and nodded in acknowledgment of the other boy's words and in thanks. Although he was in a hurry to see his husband, he did not want to cause him any discomfort and separating himself from his blade was the least sacrifice he would make to assure himself of it.
Nie Huisang was looking at him with surprise, he probably did not expect the Gusu Lan sect disciple to trust him with his spiritual weapon. He let go of the Second Jade's sleeve and the other boy immediately darted towards the inn. He quite literally flew up the stairs onto the second floor and was already standing in front of the room the Qinghe Nie disciple indicated.
It would have been wise to first compose himself and knock on the door to be let in, he still had his reputation to uphold even if he let himself slip in front of Nie Huisang earlier; it would probably also help Wei Ying to prepare himself, came a thought that was quickly brushed aside in favour of his eagerness. He could not spare any time on formalities right now, he had to see his soulmate without delay, no matter who else was in the room.
Without knocking, he opened the door violently, nearly yanking it out of the hinges in the process. He took two steps inside the room and he froze on the spot at the sight of his run away and now found husband. Wei Ying was sitting in bed, his eyes puffy; probably from crying. Jiang Cheng and Wen Ning were also in the room, both protectively moved in front of the pregnant Omega when the door flew open.
Lan Wangji was extremely relieved to see his beloved again but he did not appreciate in the slightest to have someone blocking his way. For some unknown reason, he felt extremely possessive right now and the others in the room seemed to him to be threatening the safety of his husband. He was surprised by himself when he growled; an animalistic sound that he was immediately ashamed of, his Alpha instincts taking over in an attempt to protect his Omega.
He immediately regretted it as Wei Ying flinched badly in the bed and tried to hide under the covers, whimpering and crying pitifully. Lan Wangji was silently berating himself for his slip, he just did what Nie Huisang warned him about and it pained him to see that his beloved had misunderstood his intentions. Wen Ning quickly kneeled beside the bed and started reassuring the scared Yunmeng Jiang sect head disciple.
Jiang Cheng scowled and stepped forward, efficiently cutting the Second Jade's way to his husband, his sword, luckily still sheathed, raised to reinforce the barrage made by his body. Lan Wangji stood, frozen to the spot, his heart breaking. He did not make any attempt to approach the bed anymore.
Wei Ying was now trembling under the blankets with Wen Ning gently caressing his back and whispering something to him, occasionally shooting a murderous glance in Lan Wangji's direction. The heavy atmosphere was thickening with every second.
The Second Jade sank to his knees and hid his face in his palms. He did not want to see the result of his reckless actions. He was only now starting to be able to think clearly, and it was all too late, he had scared his husband even more, even though he was warned repeatedly about his fragile state. His thoughts were still sluggish and tangled together, his instincts threatening to take over at any moment.
Even if the mental bond with Wei Ying was still open, he would not have been able to apologize enough to the younger boy and to convince him he was only happy to see him, that he had no intention being a threat but his instincts took the best of him. He had apparently lost control, and it was the first time in his entire life; he did not know how to make things better, he did not know how to convince his beloved to trust him again.
A broken half-sob half-plea left his lips: "Wei Ying..."
