Letting go of self-restraint 2 - All that is missing is a little one

Chapter 17

Lan Wangji woke up at the usual hour. He did however not feel the usual weight nor warmth on his body, he felt around with his hand, the bed was cold. Alarmed, he sat up abruptly. Sure enough, Wei Ying was not in bed, after thorough observation, the Second Jade had to state that his soulmate was also nowhere in the room.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing and worrying mind. He could not help himself but to feel panicked: "Where is Wei Ying? Normally, he would not get up this early in the morning. What could have happened? I am sure there is something wrong... No, Lan Wangji, calm yourself, there are plenty of reasons why Wei Ying would wake up before you and get out of the bed. Maybe he wanted to go help Jiang Yanli or have some fun in the morning market in the town...

Yes, that must be it. He would not leave without a good reason, certainly not. He will be back in a few minutes or hours, with his carefree smile on his lips and teasing me for worrying too much.

I should use this opportunity and write down all his symptoms before going to talk to Wen Ning. I do not want to feel like yesterday when I could not explain myself. After I finish writing, I will go fetch brother, he should also hear this. If Wei Ying is seriously ill, I need him to help me convince him to seek treatment. Hopefully he will be more compliant when brother talks to him."

Lan Wangji had set his plan for the morning; it would also help him not to think too much about his missing husband. He was sure his soulmate would come back sooner or later, if the younger boy was not back before breakfast, he would go search for him; after all, Wei Ying was not easy to overlook, someone must have seen him.

He wrote down the list of all odd behaviours he had observed on the Yunmeng Jiang sect disciple during the last few weeks:

Loss of appetite followed by change of taste and doubled appetite

Occasional nausea

Moodiness

Change of daily routine

Nightmares, excessive worries

Loss of weight followed by gain of weight

Refusing physical contact one moment and craving it the next one

Tiredness, especially after using spiritual energy

When he had summed it up, it was quite a long list. He was wondering how he could have been overlooking all of them for so long. If Wei Ying was really sick, he should have asked for advice much sooner.

He went to Lan Xichen's room; he knew that his brother would be already awake. True enough, the First Jade invited him to come inside before he could even knock: "Wangji? Is that you? I have assumed as much when I saw you worrying over Wuxian yesterday. Come, tell me, what is wrong?"

The Second Jade was amazed his brother knew everything already, but it was no wonder, he was always able to read him like an open book. He went inside the room and showed Lan Xichen the letter he had prepared for Wen Ning. As the First Jade read, his expression was becoming more and more concerned, then pensive.

In the end, he folded the paper and gave it back to his brother, already guessing what his younger sibling was planning to do next: "I see, it is quite concerning indeed. Are you going to consult Miss Wen or Young Master Wen? I may have an idea about Wuxian's condition now, however I would like a doctor to confirm."

Lan Wangji nodded and after a short pause he specified: "Wen Ning." Lan Xichen nodded in turn and without saying anything more, they both left to find the younger of Wen siblings.

With the list safely stored inside his robes again, they made their way to meet the young Dafan Wen doctor as they have agreed to yesterday. Wen Ning was already waiting for Lan Wangji with a gentle smile, if he was surprised that both Twin Jades came to meet him, he said nothing about it. He greeted them as soon as he noticed them approaching. He then inquired why the Second Jade wanted to talk to him.

Lan Wangji did not say anything, only handed him the prepared letter. Wen Ning seemed confused; Lan Xichen looked at his brother, sighed and explained: "Young Master Wen, Wangji and I are worried about Wuxian. He has been behaving strangely lately and we wanted to consult you about his state. My brother summarised all the symptoms for you. Could you please have a look at it?"

Wen Ning read the list with serious face. It must not have taken too much time, but for Lan Wangji it seemed like hours, he could not wait for the younger boy to speak: "Were Young Master Wei's heats regular all this time?"

Lan Wangji could not tell, he was not really paying attention to that at all. He was ashamed now, of course Omega's heats were the surest indicator of any irregularities. He tried hard thinking back but he could not recall any problems with Wei Ying's heats, more like he had not even noticed them, the Yunmeng Jiang disciple was still an expert at hiding them even if he did not have to anymore.

It was Lan Xichen who spoke with pensive expression and both younger disciples turned to look at him: "Well, Wuxian was always very thorough when hiding being Omega, he could control his heats almost perfectly. Still... every time he was in heat there were very small physiological changes that could be observed. That said, I believe he did not have a heat recently. Perhaps ever since the wedding."

Finally, the Dafan Wen doctor turned back to look at the Second Jade, his face slightly blushing and his eyes avoiding direct contact: "Young Master Lan, did you engage in... you know... that specific type of night time activities with Young Master Wei sometime around your marriage?"

Lan Wangji froze but his mind was going hundred miles a second: "Is Wei Ying sick because of me? Did I do something wrong when we were together, did I not pay enough attention to him? I did follow everything that I have learned in the Omega building to the letter but maybe there was still something that I have overlooked... Should we not have done it every day? Did I put too much strain on Wei Ying? What should I do to make it better? If it turns out I could not touch him anymore, I will do it, I just want Wei Ying to be healthy and happy. I would do anything to assure that..."

He only came back to his senses when Lan Xichen was shaking his shoulders and calling him worriedly. His brother's expression relaxed after the Second Jade blinked once, then twice, trying to focus his eyes on the other's face.

Wen Ning looked extremely apologetic but repeated his question: "Young Master Lan, to finish the assessment, I need to know if Young Master Wei got over his trauma and you were able to go all the way. If yes, did it happen sometime around the wedding?"

Lan Wangji's ears were burning, he was not used to being asked such intimate questions in public. He remembered he was doing this for Wei Ying and he nodded twice.

Even with his minimal response, Wen Ning seemed to understand: "Well then, it is clear now. I am happy for you; congratulations, Young Master Wei is most probably pregnant."
