The deep rumbling growl sounded right in her ear sending chills of fear and something else entirely different rushing down her spine. A trickle of something wet dripped onto her cheek adding to that chill that seemed determined to settle in her bones.
It took Saera several tries before she fought her way to consciousness. And what met her blurry gaze nearly sent her back into a faint. They were surrounded by the palace guards, but not only that most of them had blood dripping about the torn up skin of their throats. Saera stared aghast until she recalled the reason. Her hand rose to gingerly feel about her own bloody throat.
Darr.
An ache of loss so deep had her gasping for air. But then the deep warning rumble rang out again.
Cade.
Her eyes searched the dark for him but she didn't have to look far. The witch light that lit up the otherwise pitch dark night glints off his bared fangs. Fangs that gleamed directly above her petrified face. It had been his salivating drool that wet her face. Waking her up from oblivion to face the nightmare of a reality that seemed to hound her every step.
Darr.
She couldn't believe he was truly gone. Feral. The all to familiar pain off loss stung sharply in her chest. Sure Svenneth and Darr had both turned their backs on her in taking on their new brides but that was not the pain of loss that reverberated through her very bones at that moment. It was not even the pain of blood loss or torn up throat that sent that keening need to wail with pain. It was the same loss she'd left only very recently. The loss she felt with Nick... she now felt again with Darr. They had both to all purpose and intent die died on her.
Nick to fade away from existence entirely and Darr when he lost his mind and turned feral. There was no coming back from that. Darr was as good as dead.
Just like Cade, Ash and yes, even Saera herself was about to be. For it wasn't just the bloody visage of the palace guards that held her attention spellbound. It was also the headless corpse that laid at their feet.
Was that...?
Bloody hell.
Saera would have shaken her head in doubt, but her own torn up throat prevented her. What the hell had gone on here in the short time she spent flitting between the veil? Her eyes widened in alarm, unconsciously searched and found the equally wide open eyes of the very dead Queen. Eyes still attached to a head that was no longer attached to a body.
The shock of that knowledge held her spellbound and no doubt held the rest of them in an equally shocked stance. Well all except Ash, who was reading himself with what was no doubt another morbid spellcasting.
Sure enough, not a moment after her gaze landed on the entrancing Elvan waving his hands about and befuddling their senses , then the rest of the guards that had been on their feet came crashing down. Headless.
What the fuck?
