Dawn shimmered across the skies with the emerging sun. It's rays reaching far and wide as light pulled itself out of the dark. Bringing with an array of hope that warmed the hearts of those who could witness it. But that had no affect on those trapped within Ebon Academy nor with those still out and bloodied by the battle that simply raged on.
Saera remained oblivious to all. She sat there in the pool of Nick's blood, cradling his body as best she could to prevent the fires around them from burning it to a crisp. The night had been long and weary and her tears had long since dried itself out. She had no more to shed. She sat there half burnt and parched herself.
At some point in the night, reinforcements had arrived. In time to stop the deamons who had closed in on her from dragging her off to hell. Saera had cried out then when they'd reached for her, trying to pry her hold of Nick loose so they could haul her off with them. But she had refused to let go of him. She had screeched and cried herself hoarse then clung hard to his unmoving body. They'd lifted them both then, willing to take Nick along if it had brought her along with him. But then the reinforcements has arrived and the tide begun to turn in the mages favour.
Something that went entirely unnoticed by Saera who'd sat there unmoving clutching Nick to herself the whole time muttering wordless endearments to the man who had loved her. The man she had always loved.
She recalled him in their younger days. He had her bewitched since the first time she'd laid eyes on him. His entrancing chocolate gaze had made her hungry for the actual confectionery back then. She'd licked her lips and simply stared. He'd mocked her. Riled her up at every opportunity. Bullied her. Jeered at her. Taunted her. Everything he could do, she now realised, to gain her attention. And he'd had it. The knifes edge to love was hate. And he'd always had a mingling of both from her.
They had been childish, she realised now. Bickering when they should have been loving. Fighting an inevitable attraction. Then all that had culminated in a doubt so deep she no longer believed it when he'd finally claimed to love her. Her face grimaced in a fearless anguish.
They had only just come back to each other. They had only just accepted their love. He couldn't leave her now. He couldn't be dead. Nick the fucking dick couldn't just die on her. Not now not ever!
Saera searched within for that wisp of soul that belonged to him. The wisp embedded in her own. The half of his Elvan half for his human half could not be bound to her. The half of a half would have to do. The half of a half was all she had. She burried her own soul within its depths. The part of her soul were still hers to use. Then she dragged on the half of the others. The mates who were underserving. The mates who had allowed the faculty to send Nick off into battle in the first place. They had betrayed her... again.
And that was one time too many.
The shield about the academy flickered and lapsed then. The fight was finally over. The tired wizard warlocks and warriors laid their weapons and ambled back towards the academy. A howl of pure pain rented the air. Cade brushed against her in his wolf form a moment later. Saera turned mindlessly towards him. Before turned her deadened gaze back to Nick.
"Miss?" An unfamiliar voice said in her ear a moment later. "Miss, you need to let go."
Saera simply held on.
"What are the vitals?" Came a harsh but familiar voice.
"There is none," the unfamiliar voice said simply.
Silence rang out around her then. A silence she was not aware of. Hands reached for her then, but Saera clung on to Nick. Refusing to let go.
"He's dead Saera," said harsh voice, it's sound grating in her ear.
"You killed him." Her lips moved, but was too dry to give voice to her words.
"Let him go." Prince Svennett demanded, his voice hard.
"Fuck you," she returned, voicelessly. "Fuck you all."
