We Need to Talk

Last night I didn't hear from Aaron at all, today was going to be hard. Andrew was coming and I was going to tell Grace about the divorce. I wanted to tell Aaron, but he had been in meetings all day. As soon as I get the chance I'll let him know what's going on, I didn't want there to be any surprises. I took my lunch break the moment Aaron's office door opened.

"Agent Hotchner, do you have a moment?" I ask, walking up the stairs.

"Not particularly, I'm on my way to a meeting with the Director. Can this wait?" He said, giving me the cold shoulder.

I was taken aback, "Oh, uh, yeah. I guess so. Please let me know when you have a minute free."

"Y/n! Drinks at O'Keefe's tonight!" Penny shouted from the bullpen.

"Oh, no can do, Penny G. Andrew is going to be here in a couple of hours and we have business to attend to." I frown and turn to see if Aaron was still there, he wasn't.

"Oh boo! Alright, do you need any backup?" She gave me a tough face.

I laughed, "No sweets, but if I do you'll be the first person I call."

She shooed me away, "Oh please, I know you'd call Morgan or Hotch first."

I laugh, "You're right!"

I wrap up my lunch break and go back to my desk to finish up my day. I had a feeling that Aaron wouldn't be getting back to me. I know that I told him we had to be more careful but the last time he acted like this towards me was when I first started working here. I decided I would text him just as an extra measure.

TO: Aaron Hotchner

Hey babe, I just wanted to talk to you really quick, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Andrew is coming into town today :/ He has to pack some things up at the house and wants to see Gracie.

TO:Y/N Y/L/N

Figures. Do you need anything? Sorry, I'm busy.

TO: Aaron Hotchner

No, well, just for this week to be over... that's too much time to spend with an ex, right?

TO:Y/N Y/L/N

Will he be here for a week?

TO: Aaron Hotchner

Yeah, but he's staying at the house in the guest room. I just didn't want it to come as a surprise. I'll talk to you later. I don't want my boss to be upset that I'm texting at work!

I put my phone away and got back to work. As I start to type away I chuckle to myself knowing that Aaron and I have already said I love you to each other and we hadn't labeled anything. Granted, I've only been divorced for about a week. However, whatever is going with him right now is rubbing me the wrong way. I love this man, but he put a wall up the moment something bothered him. I should've known, what a mess! I keep typing and checking my emails when a cup of coffee is placed right next to me.

"Oh my god, Em I owe you!" I look up and see Andrew, "Oh, Andy thanks. Is it four already?"

Andrew smiled and sat on my desk, "Yeah, you ready to go?"

"Yup! I just need to shut this down and turn in my reports. You didn't have to come up, you know?" I looked up at him, shutting down my computer.

"I know, but I wanted to," he strokes my cheek.

I kindly remove his hand, "I uh, I have to go turn my files in, wait for me by the door."

I knocked on Aaron's office door, but there was no answer. I figure he's in a meeting so I just left my files on his desk. I walk out and Andrew is holding the glass door open for me, so I walk a bit faster. As I make my way I'm stopped in my tracks when I hear-

"Agent Y/L/N." Aaron said.

It was like I was in the middle of a standoff with my ex-husband at one end of the room and my lover at the other.

"Y/n, come. We have to pick up Gracie." He motions his head towards the door.

I scrunch my face at Aaron and wave "Have a good night, Hotch."

He nods his head and watches as Andrew places his hand on my lower back leading me out the door. I felt sick to my stomach. Andrew puts his bags in the back seat of my car and offers to drive. I refuse, I hate how he drives. As soon as I get into the driver's seat my phone buzzes.

FROM: Aaron Hotchner

We need to talk.

FROM: Y/N Y/L/N

I'm about to drive home, Hun. Now's not the best time, how about tomorrow? Lunch?"

FROM: Aaron Hotchner

Okay, sounds good.

I smile at my phone and we are off to get Grace from my sister's. When Gracie opens the front door she jumps into Andrew's arms.

"Daddy!" She screams and giggles.

"There's my little girl!" He lifts her up in his arms.

"Did you catch the bad guy?" She asks Andrew.

He looks in my direction and I nod at him, "Yeah, sweetheart I did."

Gracie wiggles out of his arms and goes to hug me, "Mama, I missed you!"

"Aw, Grace. I missed you too sweetie! Come on, we're gonna go home." I smile and hold her hand.

She stuck by my side, I could tell it hurt Andrew. I said goodbye to my sister and off we went. Grace kept going on about the stuff she wanted us to do once we got home. I had to tell her that we all had to sit down and talk first. I was fine being the bearer of bad news, she was already distant from Andy.

We get into the house and Gracie runs to the living room waiting for our talk. She wanted it to be over with so we could spend time together. Andrew and I sit together and Grace sits in front of us.

"Mama and I have to tell you something. You're going to have to be my strong girl okay, Gracie?" Andrew pinches her cheeks.

"Okay, Daddy!" She giggles, she's so happy right now.

I take a deep breath and take her little hand in mine, "Gracie, Daddy and I won't be living together anymore..."

She looks at me with doe eyes, "W-why ? That's what Mommys and Daddys do!"

I give her a soft smile, "Yes, they do when they are married. Daddy and I aren't married anymore. He will see you sometimes but not every night."

"Like already?" She furrows her brows and tilts her head.

I simply nod, "Yes, like already. Do you know what a divorce is?"

She has her thinking face on, "It's when you break up... you can love other people now right?"

"Technically yes, but it just means Mommy and Daddy won't be together anymore. We won't have trips or weekends together anymore," Andrew tries to go more into depth.

"Okay! Can we get ice cream now?" Grace SHRUGGED and hopped off the couch.

"W-wait what? Are you sure you understand what Mommy is saying?" Andrew walks after her.

"Yeah! We don't see you that much Daddy and you don't come with us on weekend trips anymore. Ice cream time, Mama!?" Gracie shouts from the hall.

I chuckled to myself, "Um, y-yeah..."

Andrew was stunned and so was I, but what she was saying wasn't a lie. Thank god divorce is becoming more normal, well for my sake, most of her friends' parents were divorced. It'll be hard for her once it clicks somewhere down the line, but she's not torn up at the moment, which is a relief.

"So does this mean you and Daddy don't love each other anymore?" She asks as we walk out of the front door.

I look at Andrew and then I look at my daughter, "Mommy and Daddy gave each other a beautiful baby girl and because of that we will always love each other."

"Oh, okay! Good!" she skips to the car.
