"Evy you need to calm down" Peggy said watching the woman walk anxiously back and fourth "Peggy the others is back but the 107th and Steve" she respond stopping for a second and biting her lip thinking what she can do to know if they're alive "stop worrying t-" Peggy was cut off by Evelyn walking out and making her way to the Colonel
"Sir do we have informations on the 107th?" she asked "Agent Lenoir like what I told you minutes ago, not even a single word is heard from them" Philips said with his eyes still on the papers on his hand
"what about the others? did they heard anything from them before arriving back here?" she asked again making him shake his head "nothing" he shortly replied looking at her "I'm just gonna need t-"
Evelyn got cut off by the sounds of trucks and loud noises of the people on the camp. The two made their way out of the tent to see what's happening
"well, that your answer" Philips spoke as he left her side and stood on the front waiting for the rest of the team. Evelyn saw Dum Dum making her smile in relief knowing that they made it back home
She was about to walk towards where the Colonel was when Peggy called her "Evy, what's happening?" Peggy asked looking behind Evelyn "they're back" she smiled making Peggy do the same
Evelyn tried pushing past the soldiers to make her way in front where the Colonel is speaking with the rest of the team. When she made it in front, Colonel Philips glanced at her for a second with a apologetic look on his face that she didn't notice
Worry and anxious washed over Steve seeing Evelyn stood there smiling. "Steve, thank god your all alive" she said making him look down. Steve gently pulled her out from the eyes of everyone making her look at him with confusion written on her face
"you rescued everyone. I'm so proud of you" Evy smiled widely before glancing behind him looking for Bucky "Steve where's bucky?" she smiled but when she shifted her eyes back to him seeing him looking at the ground trying to hold back his tears everything around her stopped
"I- no" she said making Steve look at her "steve where is he, where's bucky?" she asked again. When Steve only looked at her with pain in his eyes tears started building up on her eyes "Steve please answer me, I need you to tell me what I'm thinking is wrong" Evelyn pleads
"I couldn't-" Steve chocked up trying to explain to her what happened "I couldn't save him. I tried Evy, i really did" he added breaking her heart into pieces. Evelyn stood there with tears flowing down her cheeks while she shake her head
"no Steve please don't say that, Bucky's alive he promise me he will come home to m-" Steve pulled Evelyn into a hug that they both need in the moment. The two stood there not caring if everyone's eyes is on them. They just lost the only person they both had and they dont care about what anyone else would think if they saw them
"he promised me a dance, he p-promise to come home" Evelyn cried into his arms while Steve wrapped his arms around her tightly "I'm sorry, I should h-have tried harder" Steve mumbled with his head down on her shoulder
"Hey Peggy" Howard called walking towards Peggy who stood from far watching Steve and Evelyn try to comfort each other by the sudden loss of their best friend. Howard raised his eyebrows seeing Peggy staring into a distance
Howard stood beside peggy and looked where she's looking at making him confused even more seeing Evelyn and Steve holding each other "what happened" he asked tucking his hands down to his pockets
"Barnes" Peggy quietly replied with tears on her eyes feeling her heart ache as she watch the two in pain. Howard's face dropped not expecting the situation to be that worse, he felt bad for them even though he don't know the two and barnes that much, he just know that they loved him too much

Peggy steps in the makeshift door of the abandoned bar while she looks around. Her eyes landed on Steve who's drinking a beer on the bar. After sensing someone's presence, Steve looked behind him seeing Peggy
"Doctor Erskine told me the serum wouldn't just work on my muscles and reflexes, he said it would work on my cells, create a protective system of healing, regenerating which means..."
He turned to her somber but clear eyed
"I can't get drunk. Did you know that?"
"Your metabolism burns three times faster than the average. He thought it could be one of the side effects"
"probably didn't want anybody stealing his schnapps"
"it wasn't your fault"
"did you read the report?"
"yes" peggy quietly said but she knew it wasn't really his fault
"then you know that's not true. I understand if Evelyn will blame me for losing the only person she had" Steve said mumbling the last parts of his words
"Evelyn thinks otherwise and I bet your friend too. Evy doesn't blame you, she can never. You know her Steve, we both do"
"how is she?" he asked looking up at Peggy "she wouldn't let herself break down unless she's with you and I think that's because no one understands her pain like you do"
"thank you for being here but I just want to be alone right now" Steve mumbled looking back down. Peggy nods understanding why he does
After minutes has passed when Peggy left, Steve felt someone's presence behind him again "Peggy I a-" Steve looked behind him seeing Evelyn stood there giving him a sad smile "Evy" he quietly said looking at her
Evelyn sat down across from Steve watching every move he does while he drinks "you know that won't help you right?" she spoke "this is the only way I know"
"how are you?" she asked "angry at myself" Steve responds making her shake her head
"you did everything you could"
"bucky waded in and pulled me out. Just like he always did. And the one time he needed me to return the favor, I couldn't" Steve said staring down at his beer
"stop blaming yourself. It was Bucky's choice to save you. You were worth saving, both of you are but it doesn't always roll that way. There will always be time on our lives where we have to choose between someone or something. You both had to choose, you chose each other but Bucky won"
"all I had to do was hold him" Steve spoke with tears down on his cheeks "it wasn't that simple" Evelyn mumbled looking down
Evelyn looked back up at him realizing that the only time he looked at her on that situation was when she walked in "Steve look at me" Steve shook his head
"I can't, you lost Bucky the only person you had, I should have tried harder" Evelyn wipes her tears away before standing up from her seat
Evelyn stood in front of him placing both of her hands on his shoulder rubbing them in a comforting manner. Steve finally looked up at her breaking Evelyn's heart even more seeing his eyes red from crying. She have known Bucky for years but she knew that Steve knew him almost his entire life
Steve stood up from his seat and wrapped his arms around Evelyn's waist with his head down on her chest. Evelyn wrapped her arms around his neck "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry Evy, im sorry" he apologized for the thousand times while evy only shakes her head and rubs his back
Evelyn felt unfair for Steve. She felt bad on how he's apologizing to her like it's his fault and she's the only one who lost him
The two held each other on their arms while letting their selves cry not caring about the whole world right now. They let their selves break down in front of each other while they try to wrap their head around the fact that he's gone
