"Zuri stay awake please” I plead but it’s too late. She’s already closed her damn eyes. She’s breathing faintly but the ambulance is two blocks away.

I’ve never been this scared shitless in my entire life. Holding Zuri’s limp body in my arms is not the direction I thought this night would head. And quite frankly it is the worst it did.

The accident has attracted some people from the party. Kira now kneels on the other side of Zuri trying so hard not to cry but failing at it all together.

I have no idea who called the ambulance though I remember shouting obscenities that sounded like “Call the ambulance” or something close to that.

My phone buzzes with a text in my back pocket. Followed by another one. And another one. Ah fuck! this better be good.

Crapper: I warned you Darelle. Didn’t I?

Crapper: Every chess master was once a beginner so for you to think you’d beat me at it is ludicrous.

Crapper: Show this to anyone and the next time it’ll be two bullets through Olivia’s and Arielle’s head.

Instinctively, I turn around only to find Crapper standing by the hotel’s exit with a smug expression on his stupid face.

For someone who calls himself a chess master he sure texts a lot. His poker face could use a face lift too.

My anger makes me want to wipe that smug off his face with my fist but Zuri needs me more than his face needs my fist.

The ambulance arrives and the medics take Zuri from my blood coated hands. It’s only been a few minutes but it feels like it’s been hours since they were called.

Kira and I go after them. There’s no way Zuri is leaving my sight especially since I know Crapper is behind all this. I just need to figure a way to protect my family while still being close to Zuri.

Questions parade my mind I barely register when we get to the hospital. Kira has been quiet beside me, her arms wrapped around herself.

The nurses take Zuri to the ER while we finish up with reception.

“I’ll call her dad” Kira says for the first time since this whole incident happened. Her eyes are bloodshot, not any different from mine I’m sure.

She walks away to call Mr. Bakari while I take a seat on one of the waiting room chairs. I’m not sure if I pray enough but dear God for the sake of my sanity make her be okay.

My legs don’t stop shaking; I’ve run my hands through my hair several times I might pull it off.

“He said he’ll be here soon” she states, settling next to me. We fall into an uncomfortable silence, neither of us knowing what to say.

We are both aware of how everything is taking a toll on us, with my incessant pacing and Kira’s shifting in her chair.

“Do you think she’ll be okay?” Kira asks almost inaudibly.
