It has been a long time since Itoshi Rin felt at home in the shadows. He gave them up once he was old enough to know they were holding him back, and even though sometimes he misses the comfort of anonymity, he thrives in the spotlight that follows the prestige of his family name and his own well-earned talent. The whispers and the stares became an old familiar friend—his only friend, thanks to the rigid walls the Itoshi family keeps between them and the rest of the world. But tonight, he must deny everything that he fought so hard to become just so he blends in with the sea of faces that crowd the streets of the Blue Lock district.

To hunt his shadow of a brother, he must become a shadow, no matter how difficult it may be.

Nervous energy thrums through his veins as he weaves his way through the crowd, and his mind runs a million different simulations of what might happen if he were to be found out. A dark helmet obscures his identity, but it also sets him apart as a stranger, lost in the midst of a community he will never understand. Maybe if he stayed here long enough, he could study their eccentricities and use them for his advantage, but he's not interested in becoming one of them. He just wants what they can give him—or rather, what Isagi Yoichi can give him.

Rin pushes past street vendors and commercial androids and hurries toward his destination: the district's underbelly, where the blurry lines of morality became muddied enough that questions could be answered by any means necessary, whatever the consequences. He mentally reviews all the information he's gathered over the years since Sae disappeared. That word is a carefully developed habit, one enforced by his parents, and it sits uncomfortably on his tongue every time he says it aloud, because he knows his brother didn't just randomly disappear. His absence is intentional, because Sae had ignored every plea and demand he threw at him, abandoning Itoshi Tech and all it stands for to live a life of crime instead. He'd left Rin with tears streaming down his face, alone in the sterile apartment they grew up in together—a place that had never felt like home unless they were both there—and he hadn't looked back once.

He grits his teeth at the bitter memory and shakes his head. His brother was once the smartest person he knew, but in their time apart, he's grown careless. There were a million rogue hackers out there, but only one of them specializes in dismantling tech developed by the Itoshi conglomerate, and the only reason PL@YM@KER knows how to take these systems apart is because he created them. It took him hours of digging through the dark web, tracking online exchanges and following pointless rabbit trails until he finally came across a solid lead. A mechanic from a random autobay in the Blue Lock district had asked for advice on how to jailbreak an Itoshi designed hoverbike—clearly stolen, based on Rin's thorough inspection of his dismal financial situation—before an upcoming race. When Rin found the virtual request even before PL@YM@KER did, he waited on the edge of his seat while he waited for the illusive hacker to take the bait. He didn't have to wait long, but most of their exchange had taken place in encrypted messages—something that Sae had always been better at than him. It left him with no other choice but to go directly to the source and force whatever information about his brother's location he could get out of Isagi Yoichi.
