Forever And Ever

You peek over your best friends shoulder. "So what's today's lucky item?" You question as you two make your way from your house to school to begin the first day at Teiko.

"A phone book, nandayo."

"It's so big!" You exclaim and point at the large object in his hand.

"Doesn't matter. Oha Asa tells me my lucky item and I bring it everywhere. It is-"

"Shintaro, I know this! We did grow up together, you know." You state and match paces beside the tall green haired boy.

"How could I forget, nandayo." He retorts.

"Aww, but you love me! Right? Promise you'll love me forever and ever and ever, Shintaro!?" You grin and walk beside him.

"No."

"Aww! You'll make me cry." You pout and gaze into Midorima's eyes. He flushes red and looks away.

"Yes, fine. I promise, nandayo. Now stop looking at me like that." A huge smile spreads across your face as you clap your hands in pure joy and nuzzle your face into his arm. He shakes his head at your crazy behaviour.

"So you're trying out for the Teiko basketball team this year like you promised?" You ask as you two enter the school premises.

"Maybe."

"But Shintaro, you're so amazing! You've got to!" You praise. Midorima's face goes a little red but he quickly hides it with his taped fingers.

"Hey! Would you like to join the reader's club!?" A guy flings a pamphlet in front of Midorima's face.

"No." He simply says.

"But you're reading a book!"

"It's actually a phone book, nandayo."

"W-Wha!? Why are you carrying around a phone book!?"

"Oha Asa's lucky item of the day, of course."

You sigh and push Midorima forward a bit. "Walk faster! I wanna watch you sign up for the basketball team." You nudge the tall boy and he stumbles.

"A-Ah! Stop pushing, nandayo!"

» time skip a few years »

"So the rumours are true... You're going to Shutoku, huh?" You play with your fingers as you ask Midorima, your best friend, the dreaded question.

"Yes."

"Okay... Have fun." You force a smile and he does the same.

"I will."

"Play good for me, okay?" You bite down on your lip as tears form in your eyes. Midorima struggles to maintain eye contact with you. He feels just as many emotions as you do, only he refuses to show it.

"I will."

"Promise you won't stop playing?"

"I promise, Y/N."

"Thanks for everything, Shintaro. We'll see each other again." You smile and wave goodbye. You walk away, leaving the green haired boy standing alone in the middle of an empty court with his head hung low.

The school you're going to is in Akita where as Shutoku is in Tokyo and you know that you'll fall out of contact with him. Your feelings for Midorima grow each day and you will never be able to get over your first love.
