Chapter 16 - Runaway

Laura's POV

We were home soon enough.

Riker and Vanessa kept asking what happened.

We told them, but we just wanted some peace and quiet, and to be alone.

"What are we gonna do?" I sighed and dropped myself on the bed as Ross closed the door.

"I don't know..." Ross sighed too and laid down next to me.

Melody climbed on the bed.

"You're not gonna give me up, are you?" She asked.

"No... Of course not. But right now, we really don't know what to do."

"If they find out we have Melody, we'll go to jail," Ross said.

I looked down. "Let's just get some sleep, okay? We'll think of something tomorrow."

We all settled down under the blankets.

As I slept, I kept thinking of a plan.

I can not lie.

There are cameras all over town.

If they see that Ross and I are with Melody in more than one of them, we're dead.

But giving up Melody is something I would never do.

As soon as I went deeper into my thoughts, I fell asleep.

The Next Morning

I woke up with Ross and Melody still sleeping next to me.

I got up and walked to the kitchen since I needed a glass of water.

Everyone was still asleep, and only I was awake.

Riker and Vanessa were still in bed too.

Once I got the glass of water, I was on my way back to the bedroom when the doorbell rang.

Whoever they were, they only rang it once. Then banged on the door hard a couple times after.

I opened it.

And there they were, the police.

"Ms. Laura Marano, you and Mr. Lynch are arrested for keeping this little girl and telling us that you didn't have her," one held up a picture of Melody.

"Um... I-I can explain," I said, scared.

"You can explain to the judge."

"What?! No!"

The officer took my hands behind me and handcuffed them.

"Ross!" I yelled, practically crying already.

Soon enough, I heard footsteps running down the stairs, and it was Ross.

His eyes were roaming around the room, studying the police and he knew what they were doing here.

"Let her go!" He shouted and ran down the stairs.

Then, one of the police pulled out a gun, and pointed it straight at Ross.

"Stop! What are you doing?!" I tried to get out of their hold.

"Sir, we really don't want to do this," they said to Ross.

"Then don't!" I yelled again.

"Let go of my girlfriend first," Ross demanded.

Then, I heard a gunshot.

And then...

I woke up.

Everything was just a dream.

I felt relieved.

Ross is still here, Melody is-

"Laura! Laura wake up!"

I looked to my side and found Ross shaking me over and over.

"I'm awake, I'm awake! What happened?"

"Melody... She, left us a video."

"Left us a video?"

"Look."

Ross handed me the iPad, and I saw Melody on the screen.

First, I looked around the room for her.

And once I didn't see her, I already knew.

I pressed play.

"Mommy Laura, Daddy Ross, I made this video because I can't really write yet," she smiled a little, which made me smile too. "But I wanna say thank you. Thank you for taking care of me while I was here. You both were such good parents to me. But as much as that, I don't want you to go to jail for me. So, I'm sorry I did this, but I went away again. Just remember that I'll always love you. Bye Mommy and Daddy :)"

And the video stopped.
