Chapter Eighteen ✓

NO ONE SURVIVES A NIGHT IN THE MAZE

"TERRY, TERRY, COME AND FIND ME!" A little girl yelled, as they ran around the computer room which was dark so it made it more fun to play hide and seek in. The WCKD compound had lots of places to hide, but this was one of the girl's favourite places to play tag. 

When they weren't doing school, they were either playing tag or doing something else in the compound. Teresa groaned and threw her head back. "I can't find you, Scar! You're too good at this!" 

Scarlett giggled and hid underneath a desk. She placed a hand over her mouth so she would stop herself from giggling. "Come find me!" Teresa spun on her heel, trying to figure out where her voice was coming from. Walking over to one of the desks, Scarlett noticed Teresa's small feet standing in front of it.

"Where are you?" Teresa asked. Scarlett kept her mouth shut and tried not to giggle since she was hiding right there in front of her.

"Scarlett." Teresa whined.

"At least give me a hint." "Teresa," Scarlett whispered. Teresa gasped and turned around.

She walked over to the back of the desk she was standing at and found Scarlett hiding there. Teresa's eyes widened and a smile formed on her face. "I found you! I actually found you!" Scarlett giggled. Teresa helped her off the ground and gave her best friend a hug. 

"You found me, Terry," Scarlett smiled. "Okay, now it's you're turn to hide!" Scarlett said to her. Teresa giggled and ran off somewhere.

"Scarlett, Scarlett, come and find me!"

After Scarlett helped Frypan cook breakfast, there was nothing else for her to do, so she went to go see Newt and Thomas again at the Gardens. "But why would Alby go into the Maze? I mean, he's not a Runner," Thomas said. Thomas was sitting next to Chuck, and Scarlett was sitting on the other side of the young boy. 

"Things are different now, Alby went to go retrace Ben's footsteps before sundown. Look, are you gonna help?" Newt asked. "So... he's gonna go back to where Ben had just been stung?" "Alby knows what he's doing, all right?" "He knows better than any of us."

Scarlett furrowed her eyebrows. "What does that mean?" Newt looked at her, then at Thomas and answered his question. "It's like you've heard, yeah? Every month, the Box sends up a new arrival. But someone had to be first, right? Someone had to spend a whole month in the Glade, alone. That was Alby." 

"I mean, it can't have been easy. But when those other boys started coming up one after the other, he saw the truth. And he learned, that the most important thing... is that we all have each other. Because we're all in this together." Scarlett pursed her lips, listening to Newt's speech. Chuck grinned a little. 

"Yeah," Thomas said, getting off the log he was sitting on, walking over to Newt. He took his knife in his hands and began to chop the big tree stump that was stuck in the ground.

Chuck moved over to Scarlett and she smiled. She noticed that he was carving a piece of wood in his hands. "Scar, you wanna help or...?"
Newt asked. She shrugged. "You really think I would be good with a large knife cutting a tree stump? Newt, I could barely find ripe tomato's and I managed to ruin Zart's plants!" Newt chuckled. "Okay, okay. Just askin'."
