Chapter Six

Looking back I didn't know why I had begged Zayn not to fight with Liam again. I had no reason to think he'd listen to me. I'd expected him to sneer at me and make some comment or flat out show me his middle finger and find Liam anyway. At least he didn't hit me. My thoughts hadn't been lying when they told me I never wanted to see the two of them fight again.

I  didn't know Liam could fight. What I did know was he would defend himself and those he cared about no matter what. I had never seen Zayn fight but he could do so as well. Maybe I should have been rooting for Liam but I couldn't bring myself to do so. I'd seen Kenneth get violent with mom and I couldn't handle it again. The violence of any kind and especially if it involved Liam. Seeing any altercation frightened me at this point.

I didn't want Liam to get hurt and I knew that wasn't the type of person he wanted to be. Nor the type of person Kaylin and mom wanted him to be. So I couldn't allow him to fight again. At any other school, they'd have both been suspended. Thankfully that didn't happen. Why he disliked his dad was beyond me when I couldn't get my dad to show me affection in years. Strange to think Kaylin hadn't been notified about Liam getting into trouble because she would have said something.

So why did Kenneth get a phone call?

Maybe I shouldn't dwell on it. However, I was still dwelling on Zayn's bruised face. It affected me I was worried about his safety as well. Melinda's boyfriend who I didn't like and who didn't like me. It was like being in his house made me believe I was in his world which I could never be. He could never be in my world and wouldn't want to be.

Perhaps I was also further affected by the fact he'd seemingly listened to my weak plea when he had no reason to. Maybe my words had affected him somehow or maybe he found me extremely pathetic. Either way, it had helped. Though I needed to stop thinking about him altogether. He'd clearly shown he had no interest in speaking to me outside of this project. I needed to accept that and get it done as soon as possible.

Then my thoughts drifted to Miles. The cruelness of his laughter when he'd tripped Liam was almost too much. The Miles I had dated would never do that. He was too kind and loving towards me. Why had he cheated and turned this way? My mind screamed the question all the time with no answer. Why with Melinda. Yes, she was beautiful but he'd always told me I was beautiful. I didn't believe it myself but I always felt he did.
"Ariel, get up," Liam sounded on my door before opening it anyway.

"I am awake," I chuckled sitting up.

"Luci is here."

"She is?"

"Yep," he grinned. Of course, Kenneth was at work right now meaning she had the freedom to come here. Kenneth hated it when she came here knowing she may finally leave him and never come back.

I quickly got ready before walking down the stairs to see mom and Kaylin sitting at her kitchen table chatting over coffee. They loved to talk, bond, and reminisce over old times. I loved their friendship and I could only hope I could make lasting friendships like that one day.
"What's a woman got to do to get a hug from her daughter and her godson?" Mom joked. Liam reached her first and embraced her then it was my turn. It was always such a relief to see her and know she was okay.

"What are you kids doing today?" Kaylin wondered.

"Well, first of all, there's a party at Nick's house tomorrow," Liam announced.

"Why don't you invite this Maggie girl?" Mom suggested to us. I smiled at Liam who nodded.

"I guess we could. She needs to meet Reggie too."
