Chapter Forty-One

After an awkward moment of silence, I followed him outside the room. We walked down the hallway and I waited for him to speak up, but as we entered an empty elevator he remanded silent. I snuck a peek at him as we waited in the elevator. He kept an expressionless face and after a moment I decided to speak up.

"Miles?" I asked.

"Hmm?"

"What are you doing?" I asked over the elevator music.

He turned to me, "I wanted to talk to you."

Okay... well, he couldn't have picked a different time to do that? I needed to be up there with mom. Not down here talking with my ex-boyfriend. Literately, everyone was up there in the room with her and I needed to be too, but for some reason, I decided to come to talk with Miles.

"Okay. Well, what is it?" I questioned.

The doors opened and he stepped out. Doing the same he began walking towards the exit. "Miles—"

"You didn't seem too excited to see me up there." He blurted, cutting me off.

That caught me off guard as I paused. "What?" I wasn't trying to be rude but I was confused as to what he was doing.

He stopped in front of me. "When you saw me walk in. You didn't seem like you wanted me there."

I blinked, shaking my head. "No. Miles, I was just surprised. I didn't expect you to be there. I didn't even know you knew what happened." I explained.

"Zayn was there." He pointed out.

I looked away, shrugging. "Yeah, I didn't know he would be coming either."

"How did he know?"

"He walked in while Liam and I were talking to Eric and Kaylin."

"Why would he want to come see your mom?" He asked.

"He hasn't told you anything?" I wondered in shock.

He shook his head. "You'd be surprised the things we keep from each other." He muttered and I could see a hint of emotion behind his eyes.

"He and Liam are mom's godsons," I admitted.

His eyes widened briefly. "Oh. I didn't know."

We were quiet for a while until I realized I needed to get back to mom. "Listen, I appreciate you coming by. It was really sweet of you, but I need to get back." I pointed out.

He met my eyes. A look of hurt flashing through them. He nodded after a second. "It's fine. I understand." He muttered, running a hand through his hair.

I nodding turning away to walk back to the elevator when his voice stopped me. "I know you guys kissed again."

I froze. Turning on my heels, I looked at him in shock. "W-what?" I breathed out.

He stepped towards me, an unreadable expression written on his face. "I know Zayn kissed you again." He stated and my face paled.

"I-I... we..." I was at a loss for words as I stared up into his forest colored eyes.

"It's okay, Gem. You can tell me." He encouraged.

He reached out, taking my hand in his and my eyes zeroed in on our joined hands. Slowly, I turned my attention back up to him. "It shouldn't have happened." I breathed.

He rubbed my hand. "Do you honestly believe that or do you just feel guilty?"

"Both. Miles, it shouldn't have happened. Not for a second time. It shouldn't have happened the first time either. I feel so ashamed. I have a boyfriend and he has a girlfriend. I don't know why I allowed it to happen." I blurted, tears breaking through.
