Chapter Forty-Two

The next morning Liam and I entered the school building five minutes before the late bell was supposed to ring. The halls were crowded with students as they always were and we carefully made our way to our lockers.

"Dang thing! Every single day!" We heard Maggie grumble as she fiddled with her locker.

Liam chuckled, "Need some help there?" He asked, kneeling beside her.

She turned to him with a glare. "This thing is the work of the devil!" She spat, pointing at her locker.

"I highly doubt that." I chuckled.

She glared up at me as I stepping beside her to open my own locker with ease. "I hate you!" She growled, looking at me in both shock and annoyance.

I arched an eyebrow. "Why? Because I can open my locker and you can't?" I smirked.

"I will not hesitate to end you." She threatened.

"Something tells me you're not joking." I grinned, shutting my locker after grabbing my English book.

"Oh, I'm not." She smirked evilly.

"Liam, open her locker before she murders me." I joked.

"On it." He chuckled. He put in the combination and pulled on the lock. It clicked open and Maggie whipped her head around to Liam.

He smirked at her, wiggling the lock in front of her face. She glared, jerking it from his hand. "You both work for the devil. I swear." She grumbled, gathering her things from her locker.

We shared a laugh. "I'm sure we are. Anyway, do you want to come with us after school to visit Luci? Well actually after work," Liam asked her, helping her to her feet.

She instantly smiled. "I'd love to. How is she?" She asked, turning to me.

"She's fine. Thankfully, Kenneth didn't stay long after we left. Though, I'm sure she wished he did." I frowned.

"I understand she loves him, but he shouldn't be allowed to just hurt her like that and get away with it. He could have really hurt her." Maggie frowned.

I sighed, "I know."

"Sorry." She said in an afterthought.

I shook my head. "No, you're right. He could have hurt her way worse than he did. I'm just glad she's okay."

"That's the important part." Liam offered.

We neared my first period and I sighed, turning to them. "Meet you after class?"

They nodded, "Of course." Liam smiled, hugging me. Maggie did the same after him and I smiled at them both as they left to go to their own classes.

I walked into class and was surprised to see Zayn already sitting in his seat. A fresh wave of nervousness coursed through me as I remember we were supposed to talk today. I wasn't ready for this and I had a feeling he wasn't either. Maybe he wouldn't bring it up?

"Good morning, Ariel." Alec offered.

I turned to him and nodded. "Morning, Mr. Gray." I smiled. It was still so awkward knowing he'd dated mom and still had feelings for her. He could potentially be my father and that just made thing even weirder.

The bell rang and I walked back to my seat. Alec began class, but I could tell he was sort of off today and I had to guess it was because of what happened to mom. When they'd hugged yesterday I noticed the way they both tensed, but I could also notice the longing in their eyes.
