Chapter Forty

After class, Liam and I had rushed to get to the hospital to visit mom. Maggie had wanted to come but her parents had asked her to come home straight after school. I'd told the others what happened but decided to tell them all to hold off on visiting at least until we'd found out what happened. After my explanation, I think they all knew it was due to the fact I hadn't known how Kenneth might react and didn't want him saying or doing anything towards them.

When we arrived at the hospital I noticed Zayn's car as he was also getting out. He looked at us briefly in surprise and I guess he wasn't exactly expecting us to see him when we arrived. Deciding to ignore him, for now, I tugged on Liam's arm and pulled him into the hospital. Right now I just needed to see my mom and know that she was okay. Rather that she was okay now.

"Why is he here?" Liam whispered as we walked down the hallway of the hospital.

I glanced slightly behind my shoulder at Zayn as he followed us silently, looking down at his phone. "Because he wants to check on mom?" I shrugged, turning back to look at Liam.

"I guess but it doesn't make sense when he acts like this. I think he's bipolar or something."

"Maybe," I shrugged again. Honestly, I didn't care why he was here. The most important thing right now was my mom. Still, I was touched to know he was here because he cared about her. He hadn't forgotten who Mom and Kaylin were to him and that made my heart feel warm. When we arrived at the room number Kaylin had given us I sucked in a breathe afraid of what I might see.

"It's okay," Liam said, patting my back and I felt Zayn closing in on the spot as well. Releasing another breath, I opened the door and walked inside. Mom was laying in the bed, a cast around her arm and she looked understandably in pain. Despite this, she smiled upon seeing us.

"Mom," I said, my lip quivering.

"It's alright, sweetheart. Come here," she said, wincing as she struggled to smile. I wiped my eyes, going over to carefully hug her.

"I love you," I whispered.

"I love you too." I didn't want to let go of her but I knew Liam and Zayn were still waiting to see her. I moved back just slightly as Liam approached her bending down for her hug.

"Maggie wanted to be here to see you but her parents wanted her at home right now. She wants to come see you when she can."

"Aww thank her for me. She doesn't have to feel bad for not visiting today."

"Reggie and the others will come by too," I added.

"Thank them as well. You kids are so sweet." She turned to Zayn with a smile and gestured him to come forward. He did so and leaned toward her.

"You look more like Eric and Evelyn every day. Thank you for coming sweetheart," she told him.

"I had too," he shrugged.

"You guys are all so much more caring than we were at your age you know?" She smiled as though thinking about her own youth.

"They really are," Kaylin smiled.

"Your hurt badly but do they have an idea when you might be able to go home?" I questioned.

"Not for a few days at least," she sighed. I knew it was hard for her to be in a hospital and not taking care of Kenneth and I like I knew she wanted to be. I hated Kenneth all the more knowing he'd done this to her.

"Oh well, you need the rest and you know I'll make sure Ariels fed," Kaylin smiled.

"Mom she's seventeen. She doesn't need you to feed her," Liam commented.
