Chapter 12

Niall's POV // There's Nothing Wrong

"Come on, Ev...Pick up, pick up, pick up..." I quietly pleaded while the FaceTime call rang for the fifth time since I landed in London 10 minutes ago.

The second the plane landed, I switched my phone on seeing a text from Evie that I would read once I was settled in the car. I slid the phone into my pocket, feeling it vibrate several times as I collected my backpack and other belongings and stepped off the plane.

Thankfully I had a car waiting on me on the tarmac and wouldn't have to make the trek through the terminal today.

I slid into the back seat of the car with Basil hopping into the front next to the driver, however we were not alone. Once safely buckled into the SUV I looked around to find my manager Paul and my assistant Tara staring back at me looking like they were about to tell me I had 3 months to live.

"Hello?" I chuckle questioningly, sliding my phone out of my pocket.

"I'm guessing you haven't checked your phone since you landed?" Tara asked, cutting right to the chase and wincing a bit at the question.

"No?" I furrowed my eyebrows, but at that exact moment my phone screen lit up everything came screeching to a halt around me.

There were countless news articles, and frantic texts from members of my team including the two that sit across from me now, but the one that really mattered to me was the text message at the top.

Ev: We need to talk.

The text message prior to that one had told me all about her busy day, filled with cute little anecdotes from her and painting the perfect picture of an afternoon that I wish I had been a part of, but this text...this one scares me.

We've been caught.

And the four missed calls from me to her have me even more afraid of what's to come.

Just when I think the call is about to decline again, the screen flashes and before I know it her beautiful face is in front of me.

I finally take a breath again.

We stare at each other through distant phone screens, until finally she speaks up.

"Hi." She says, and in that moment i'm filled with butterflies and relief because her tone is just as cheery as when I left her and the smile on my face gives me hope that I haven't screwed this entire thing up.

"Hi." I mimic her tone with a soft smile.

There is another pause before I finally form words and put them into a sentence.

"I'm so sorry, Evie."
