Leo is used to different accents and languages, after all he's been living in New York City his entire life. While he might not be participating in the "normal" life, he still has ears. It's hard to hear something from the rooftops but if he's hiding in the shadow (or at a basketball game like in 2016) it's fascinating. However, it would take him a while to fully understand you. He was a little helpless the first time he heard your accent. Just like anyone would have been. He didn't mean it in a bad way, he was just caught off guard. The more you talked to him though, he better he understood - depending on how thick your accent is of course. Depending on how much time you spend together he might develop an accent as well. Just because he hears it so often from you. Also, he'd smile if you bring out some slang while talking to his brothers.
