Jack and I had finally reached the town, Jack has been going out more often with me and this was the first time in a while, he was getting ready to go to the gas station, I stopped and let his hand go.
"Hm?" He looked at me.
"I h-have some th-things t-to do on m-my own." I said, "Will you b-be ok-kay?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine." He said, "Go do whatever you need to, I'll meet up with you back near the forest later."
I wrapped my arms around him quickly before I left him there, a substitute for a kiss, he went his own way as I went mine, when I reached the phone booth I was discouraged to see someone was already in there, I stood nearby quietly as I waited for them to be done, I kept my head low and did my best to keep my eyes away as well, but I couldn't help but watch him, it looked like he was having a heated argument, they slammed the phone down, hanging up on whoever was on the other line, he busted through the door and I jumped.
"The nerve of some people!" He said angrily, "Who does she think she is?!"
He began ranting and raving to no one in particular, I began slowly and cautiously making my way into the phone booth, and even though I closed the door I could still hear the guy shouting, I just did my best to ignore him, I entered the correct change and called Mom, I sat there listening to the phone ring for a while before someone picked up.
"Hello?" It was Mom who picked up.
"Uh, h-hey, Mom..." I said kind of quietly.
"One moment please." She said, it kind of sounded like a recording, maybe?
It was quiet for a moment before I heard a door close.
"Hello, Toby." She finally said, "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm f-fine." I replied, "G-Guess what? Jack's al-live!"
"Oh, that's great news!" She said happily.
"I r-really d-didn't think h-he was g-gonna make it, but he g-got up th-that night I c-called you!" I said happily, "He's b-been rec-covering more s-since, and I'm r-really h-happy."
She giggled slightly.
"I'm really happy for the two of you." She said.
I was a smiling mess now, I was so happy that everything turned out the way it did.
"Is there a guy shouting about something nearby?" Mom suddenly asked.
"Um, yeah." I replied as I looked at him, "He w-was on th-the phone b-before m-me, and g-got really ang-gry for.... s-some reason."
"Geez, he's loud." She complained.
"I know." I said, "And t-to th-think I'm i-in a ph-phone booth."
"That man needs to get his ass moving away from public communication." She said, "Didn't his mother teach him better?!"
I couldn't help but laugh at her, but I went quiet, the guy had noticed me and was now staring.
"I, um... think I h-have t-to g-go..." I said quietly.
"Oh, Toby...." She started.
"Y-Yeah?" I asked quietly.
"I would like to meet Jack." She said, "Not personally, of course, but over the phone."
"Um, w-well..." I trailed off as I watched the guy, "Jack's n-not one f-for t-talking on th-the ph-phone."
"I can understand that." She said, "But it would be nice to actually talk with him."
"Um, y-yeah, okay..." I said quietly, "I'll, uh... t-try t-to convince h-him."
"Alright, I guess I should let you go." She said, "Goodbye."
"Bye." I said.
I hung up the phone and silently left the phone booth.
"Hey, you." The guy said.
I froze up, oh god, oh god, oh god, please don't recognize me... please don't recognize me...
"I have a couple questions for you." He said as he came over.
My entire being was filled with dread, oh man I wish Jack were here.
"I'm looking for someone." He said, "A... a Jack Nicoles."
My heart basically stopped, but I tried to play it off cool.
"Um... N-Nicoles...?" I asked.
"Yes, Jack Nicoles." He replied, "Know him?"
I shook my head.
"N-Never h-heard of h-him." I claimed.
He narrowed his eyes at me.
"Why are you stuttering, then?" He asked, "You're nervous about something."
"I h-have t-terret-ts you asshole!" I said angrily, "Are y-you m-making fun of m-my d-disab-bility?!"
The guy now looked both surprised and terrified.
"Oh, um, s-sorry." He said, "I didn't mean to assume."
He had actually pissed me off, I grumbled curses at him as I stepped around him.
"Ther n-nerve of s-some p-people." I growled back at him, "Asshole."
I walked off, now in a bitter mood, I walked back toward the forest, I stood around the building near it as I waited for Jack, soon he appeared around the building.
"I'm o-over here." I said.
He looked towards me, then started coming over, he held his hand out and I took it, I saw he had a bag with him.
"I bought you some things, hope you don't mind." He said.
"Not at-t all." I smiled.
He held out the bag to me and I happily took it, then remembered the guy.
"Um, Jack..."
"Yeah?" He asked.
"There w-was a g-guy l-looking for y-you." I said, "He a-asked f-for you b-by n-name."
"Good god..." He muttered as he covered his face with his hand, "Those asses are actually sending people out to find me..."
I lowered my head slightly as I held on tightly to his hand.
"Don't worry, it's fine." He said, "I'm not Jack in town, my name is Neil Kyllroy."
I looked at him slightly.
"And you're Jake Booris." He said, "Fake identities."
I sighed in relief, he was right, he wasn't Jack, I held onto his hand again.
"I c-called my m-mom ag-gain..." I said quietly.
"Wow, you really do have a death wish." He said sarcastically, "Aren't you worried about getting in trouble?"
"If anyo-one w-would know it'd b-be my m-master, b-but he h-hasn't s-said anything ab-bout it." I said, "It's p-probably b-because she's n-not a th-threat, she st-till loves m-me enough t-to not w-want me caught."
He sighed in defeat, I took a small step closer to him so our shoulders were touching and rubbing against each other as we walked.
"She w-wanted t-to meet y-you." He said, "Over th-the ph-phone, of c-course."
He sighed again as he rubbed the back of his head.
"Yeah, okay." He said, "Sure, talk with her."
We were far enough away from town, I pulled my mask down before I grabbed his and pulled it down slightly, I gave him a quick peck on the cheek, he turned to me slightly as he held my hand tighter.
"You truly are strange." He said, "But... I'm happy with it."
His words made me overly happy, I was basically getting drunk off this feeling, I stood right next to him as we continued walking.
"So... w-what are w-we d-doing next?" I asked.
"We're meeting up with John." He said.
"John?" I asked.
He went really quiet, I looked at him to see he was obviously thinking.
"Puppeteer." He said, "We're meeting up with Puppeteer."
"So his r-real name i-is John?" I asked.
"Well, Johnathan, but he's fine with John." He said, "Anything's better than Puppet Boy or Doll Guy."
I snickered slightly, I could tell he was smiling too, I was ready to take on the world with him, one step at a time.
