chapter sixteen
the cullens.

A knock on the front door interrupted Christina as she was getting Annie dressed for the day. The spunky five-year-old jumped out of her bed and raced towards the main hallway.

"Annie, hold on!" Christina ran behind her daughter and quickly scooped the young girl up in her arms. Annie continued to giggle as the mother sighed deeply. "You're gonna give me a heart attack one of these days," she muttered under her breath before opening the front door.

A smirking Carlisle was behind the door once the young mother opened it. Both adults smiled at each other until Annie interrupted with an excited shout, "Carlisle!"

Both adults chuckled at the slight mispronunciation of his name from the young child. "Good morning, Annie."

The young brunette wiggled in her mom's arms until she got the message and passed the five-year-old over to Carlisle. The blond doctor instantly grabbed Annie and rested her on his left hip.

"I just need to get dressed and then I'm ready to go," Christina mentioned as she stepped back from the threshold to allow Carlisle to step inside. "Any hints on what we're doing so I know how to dress?"

"I'm assuming you've already eaten breakfast?" At the brunette's nod, he continued. "I wanted to introduce you to my family today."

Christina bit her lip as a bundle of nerves grew in her stomach. Carlisle noticed her quick glance over towards Annie, understanding her silent worry. "Alice already said it would go okay. Nothing will happen."

Christina sighed deeply.

"Besides, Bella is coming by as well," the doctor laughed. "Might as well kill two birds with one stone."

Christina snorted with a roll of her eyes. "Bad analogy, Carlisle." He smiled sheepishly back at her. "I'm gonna get dressed. You okay watching Annie?"

He gave her a soft smile. "Take your time."

Christina sighed one last time before nodding her head and running up the stairs; even though he told her to take her time, she still didn't feel right leaving him waiting. Though, she was sure that Annie could entertain him plenty in the time she was absent.

The young mother glanced at the outfit she had laid out on her bed before changing her mind on the blue maxi dress, and instead grabbed a pink tank top, pairing it with ripped jeans. She also grabbed her black ankle boots and called it good enough. She wanted to look casual, but with enough effort to meet Carlisle's family.
