chapter five
october.

        "Happy birthday, Annie!"

The recently turned six year old smiled big at the cake that sat in front of her. She sucked in a deep breath of air before blowing out the seven candles on her cake— six of them for her age, one for good luck.

Christina came over with a cake knife and sliced evenly through the baking good. She cut a piece for each guest before handing them out, giving Annie the first piece as tradition. Christina glared at the last slice of cake, knowing that it was for Bella, and knowing that it would never get eaten.

It has been a month since the Cullen family left Forks; and while Christina's heart still hurt with heartbreak, Bella acted worse. The mother couldn't afford to play zombie-like her younger sister was— she had her daughter to take care of and bills to pay. Plus, she wasn't sure Charlie would be able to handle two completely broken daughters. He was already stressing over Bella's mental state— and that's not even including the nightmares.

Sometimes they weren't noticeable to the household, and sometimes Bella's scream would wake them all up with a fright. Christina and Charlie would take turns on waking Bella up and putting her back to sleep. It was a rarity that Bella talked to anyone, but during the night after a nightmare, she would mutter how broken she felt.

"My big girl!" Darien exclaimed, lifting Annie up into the air. Annie giggled as she wrapped her arms around the ebony nurse's neck. "Finally the big six years old! How did you ever get so big?"

Christina's lips twitched into a grin as she watched her best friend interact with her daughter. He was determined to be there for Annie on her birthday, and not a day later.

The only other guests that made it to Annie's party were the Blacks and the Clearwaters. Christina couldn't thank the two families enough for showing up and making her daughter's day a little brighter.

"Chris."

The mother looked over her shoulder as Charlie walked back into the living room. He held a giant box in his arms, with a note sitting on top. She furrowed her brows as she met him halfway and looked closer at the box. The envelope read Annabelle on the front, but there was no name and no return address.

"Is it from Jon's parents?" Charlie asked. He placed the box down on the couch, and Annie immediately lit up with excitement.

"Momma, can I?" She asked, already fingering the wrapping surrounding the box.

Christina nodded her head. "Go ahead," she muttered as she slipped her finger underneath the opening to the envelope. She opened up the folded letter and held her breath as she read the elegant writing.

    To a wonderful little girl,
Happy Birthday, sweetheart. You deserve more than just
a simple present on this special day— and I only wish that
I could give you that. Maybe one day I will, as I have plans
to be in your life in the future. I don't want to miss out on
you growing up into a brilliant woman.

I love you, and I miss you so much. Till we see each other
    again.
        —Rosalie

"Who's it from?" Charlie asked. He started to get worried as he saw tears form in his daughter's eyes from the letter.

"An old friend," Christina whispered. She quickly wiped her tears, hearing Annie's excited giggle at whatever present was in the box. "A very special friend."

"Momma! Look at all my new clothes!"

These next couple of chapters are only going to snippets of the coming months. There are going to shorter than usual, but they're updated close to each other, so it's almost like one big chapter in three sections! The next chapter will be up tomorrow. These are kinda just fillers until the main chapters again.

Happy reading—
