chapter six november.
November hit hard for Christina. The constant pain that resided in her chest was amplified. She was tired— tired from work, and tired from taking care of Bella on top of her daughter. The young mother was constantly exhausted but kept a strong face. She deserved one day to let everything she's been holding back out.
November twenty-third was that day. It was the same day that Jonathan Miller had crashed. The same day that Annie lost her biological father from a drunk driver, spinning out of control on the highway. Christina was mad— she was so mad at the other driver. Mad at him for living; mad at him from taking away a happy father in a happy family.
Jonathan Miller has plans— he was only twenty-one years old, and he had a whole life ahead of him. He was the perfect first-time father and the perfect boyfriend to Christina. He was everything that she wanted from when she was a little kid— kind, caring, and wasn't afraid of saying how he felt. When he loved you, you knew— you never guessed if he cared because he would tell you constantly, and show you in ways you never knew possible.
Christina missed him. Annie missed him.
"How is she?"
Christina bit her lip, pulling the covers over her body more as she thought over Connie Miller's question. Jonathan's parents would call on special occasions— like today— to check up on the young mother and her daughter. The last time they called, they talked to Annie over the phone on her birthday.
"She's sleeping," Christina answered. She pushed Annie's long bangs out of her face. The six-year-old had decided that her big girl's decision would be to grow out her bangs like her mother.
"I think she's okay. We went to the local church so she could talk to him," Christina continued with a sigh. "We'll have to come to visit soon. I know she misses you two."
"We miss her, too," David answered gruffly. "We miss you as well."
Christina felt tears well up in her eyes at the words of her ex-boyfriend's father. "I miss you both," she answered, trying not to sound like she was crying— but they knew, they always knew.
"We will let you go," Connie sighed. "Call us soon, okay? Don't be a stranger."
"Wouldn't dream of it," Christina muttered. "Bye, love you both."
"We love you, too. Goodbye Christina— give a hug and a kiss to Annie for us, okay?"
Christina ended the phone call with a promise before slipping her phone back onto her bedside table. She bit her lip harshly, feeling the spot where her heart laid beating painfully. She turned over onto her side before scooting Annie closer to her chest, resting her head on top of her unruly black curls.
"Jonathon," Christina whispered into the open air. "I miss you."
