chapter twenty
the hunt.

Christina watched silently behind Edward as three figures emerged from the tree line. She tried to keep her breathing soft, but her heart was hammering in her chest.

The first male to enter the field had dark dreads falling around his shoulders; his skin was a beautiful ebony color, making his startling red eyes pop against the contrast. The second male had blond hair, pulling back to the nape of his neck. His skin was pale, like the rest of the Cullen's, but somehow murkier. Christina could only guess that it was because of the lack of a shower; the dirt clung to his skin regardless of how perfect vampires were.

The last of the rogues was a female, with bright crimson eyes, perfectly matching her wild hair. The curls fell around her striking features, making her seem more catlike than human.

Carlisle stepped up, flanked by Emmett and Jasper. Christina bit the inside of her lip nervously as he stepped into the line of fire to meet with the nomads. In the corner of Christina's eyes, she could see how Alice and Rosalie stepped just slightly closer to Christina's side; as she was the only human to be open visually.

The male with dreads smiled easily towards Carlisle, trying to alleviate the tension that was built between the two groups. "We thought we heard a game." He held up a ball in his left hand. "I believe this belongs to you."

He threw the ball, faster than Christina's eyes could catch, but not fast enough for Carlisle. He easily caught the ball before giving him a polite smile. "Thank you."

"I am Laurent," he said, introducing himself before pointing over his shoulders. "This is James and Victoria."

"I'm Carlisle, and this is my family. Emmett, and Jasper, Rosalie, Christina, and Alice, Edward, and Bella." He pointed them out into groups, trying hard not to point anyone out deliberately.

Christina relaxed her posture slightly as they hadn't noticed there were two humans in the group of vampires.

"I'm afraid your hunting activities have caused somewhat of a mess for us," Carlisle mentioned, making Christina's heart jump at the thought of all the killings lately.

"Our apologies," Laurent muttered. "We didn't realize the territory had been claimed."

"Yes, we maintain a permanent residence nearby."
