Everette woke up a few hours later, and Marce, Caleb and I went to talk to him. He looked exhausted, and his whole face was covered with bandages.

Even under the white sheets, he looked handsome. Man, I'm so whipped!

"Hello, Evie."

He glares at me playfully. "I thought I told you not to call me, Evie."

I give him my innocent eyes. "Oops?"

He laughs. The laugh that makes my heart palpitate. I missed it.

"God, I missed you. How are you feeling?"

He shrugs. "Just peachy."

"Really? "

"Yeah."

Everett turns towards his friends. "Hey."

They both smile at him. "Hey, man. How you doing?"

"I'm fine. What are you doing here?"

"Someone's not excited to see us." Caleb snickers.

Everett rolls his eyes. "Aren't you supposed to be with your new leader? "

"We are our own persons right now. We belong to God."

Everett starts laughing hysterically, causing the smiles on Caleb's and Marce's faces to flatter.

"Y-you," he laughs, "You belong to God?" *more laughs* "You belong to God?"

"What's so funny about it?" Caleb glares.

"Eh, aren't you part of a gang?"

"Not anymore. We gave our lives to Christ. "

Evie laughs.

"You are actually serious?" he asks when he sees the determination on Caleb's and Marce's faces.

"Yeah. Al led us to Christ."

Everett looks at me with an unreadable expression. "Can I speak to Al alone? "

The guys leave, leaving me alone with Everett.

"You led them to Christ?" He asks.

I nod in reply.

"So you are a pastor now?" he mocks.

"Anybody can get saved through somebody. It's not a must a person to be a preacher, a reverend or a pastor. You just have to proclaim God in your life with your mouth and ask for forgiveness. "

"Really?"

"Really. So, do you want to have Him in your life?"

"Not really."

"Why?"

"Because."

"Because what?"

"I have my own reasons, okay?"

"Well, I wanna know them. There's nothing that can hinder you from entering the kingdom of God."

"He let my family die."

"Your dad is alive, isn't he?"

His jaw clenches. "I don't have a dad."

"Yes, you do."

"He left me and my mom. He's gone."

"Okay...those are two reasons. The third one is?"

"He lets my family suffer. My mama is in hospital. And Jace too. Why do bad things happen to good people? My mama told me that my mother had been a very good Christian. Did everything the Lord wanted her to do. And then what? He let my mother die."

"The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil b to come. He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness." (Isaiah 57:1-2 KJV)

"I don't understand."

"God takes away the good people to protect them from the evil to come. That means your mother is in heaven now, and is at peace. She's in a better place."

"No. The better place should be near me. Close to me. By her son's side."

"Earth is nothing compared to heaven. One day, we will all understand."

He grunts. "I don't think I'll ever understand."

"You will soon. I know you will."

He huffs. I chuckle at his behavior.

"Have you tried searching for your father?"

"Yeah."

"Did you find anything?"

"Yeah."

"Is he alive?"

"Yeah."

"Everett."

"Mmh?"

"You are really pissing me off."

"Sorry. I just don't want to talk about it."

"You'll tell me soon?"

"I will."
