Vanessa POV
Surrounded by a bunch of children and their parents I groaned internally at the heart-breaking sight of my sobbing daughter. Her freckled usually pale cheeks now painted in red, accompanied by a river of tears, which slowly soaked into her blue scarf.
"Honey, please..." I knelt in front of her, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "It's going to be fun - I promise to come for you if you won't enjoy it," I told her in a poor attempt to calm her down.
"I-I don't want to go!" she wept. It wasn't often when Amira has gotten this upset, my heart was torn, but my mind knew it was the right decision. "I want to stay with you, and I want to see Alexis!" she continued her rant.
I knew the importance of taking part in extracurricular activities. I wouldn't want her to feel excluded from the conversations with her friends when the field trip was going to be the topic of the month.
I bit onto my bottom lip contemplating which route to choose for this conversation.
"But Alexis was so excited for your field trip, honey... She specifically asked for you to describe to her all the animals you will see at the aquarium."
This might have not been one of my proudest moments, but I would've to lie if I said I didn't use Alexis as a motivational factor for Amira. Somehow, she just worked wonders on my little girl, so cut me some slack, I was a single mother after all.
"She did?" My daughter sniffled and wiped off her tears.
I couldn't help but allow a tiny smile to crack upon my lips. Of course, a simple mention of a brunette was enough to stop her from crying. In all honesty, it wasn't a lie. When I told Alexis about Amira's school trip to one of the largest aquariums in the country, she became more excited than any child ever would.
Note to self, take Alexis to the aquarium.
"Yep, she never had a chance to visit so she was counting on you... Also," I whispered into her ear. "I heard they got sharks, isn't that your favorite animal?"
"Sharks?! Nessi, I will see sharks?!" she beamed with joy, her red cheeks an only reminder of her recent tears. "You go, Nessi, go-go."
The spark in her eyes was something I never wanted to disappear. Victoria, please tell me I was always going to be able to protect it.
I teasingly rolled my eyes at my daughter, "Okay, okay, I'm going. You will be alright, yes?"
A quick nod was all I got before she dashed towards the bus. I watched her ramble about something with her classmates before she suddenly ran back to me and pointed for me to kneel. Following her request, I was rewarded with a kiss.
My heart filled up with happiness.
Amira could never understand how much those moments meant to me. I needed them as a reassurance that I was doing right... that I could be a good mother.
"Give one to Alexis too, okay?"
"What?" I squeaked taken aback. "You can do it yourself when you come back, honey..."
