It had been 5 years. 5 long, painful years since the death of Freddie Mercury. The band was in despair, Freddie's husband had closed himself off from the rest of the world, and Freddie's infant daughter, Sophia, was wondering why her papa never smiled, and who the man papa always talked about was. Freddie, papa said, but he always referred to him as Daddy in front of her. Could she meet Daddy one day?Jim sat in Freddie's favourite living room spot, near the fire, wanting to be as close to his husband as he could possibly manage. He wished desperately time and time again for his husband to return, to see that beautiful smile of his just one more time.
Freddie had died during childbirth, but the baby had made it out alive. It was, Jim guessed, to be expected. The pregnancy was such a challenge for Freddie; he was so ill, so sick, but he persisted because he wanted to be a dad so badly. He'd always wanted a baby, what was a little sickness? He'd be fine, he always insisted.
"But you weren't fine, were you? You're too stubborn, that's the problem. You didn't listen. You should've took the painkillers. You should've taken the epidural. You would still be here." Jim spoke to himself, looking up at the photograph of him and Freddie on the mantel. Freddie was smiling beautifully in that photo. It was taken when Freddie was about 5 months pregnant, and although Jim loved Freddie's smile, he could see the pain behind it. He could see the tears glistening his eyes. Even the slightest things, like sitting up, became a challenge for Freddie in his last months of life.
Jim wished so desperately to have his husband back. He knew that he'd never be happy again until he had Freddie in his arms. What the Irishman didn't know, however, was that the ghost of his husband was sitting right beside him, looking at him, also wishing he could touch, or at least talk to his husband.
He wanted to be heard. He wanted to reassure him that he was okay, he's right here. But it was impossible. How many stories have you heard of ghosts coming back from the grave? Nobody would ever believe Jim if he walked out into the street claiming he talked to his deceased partner.
Freddie reached out, as he'd always done, wanting to take Jim's hand in his. Every time before his hand had just slipped through the skin, like a knife through a grape, and instead rested on the nearest solid object. Freddie was fine with touching inanimate objects but he couldn't pick them up, which also meant he couldn't give any sign of his presence.
But this time, he did it. His hand touched Jim's and stayed there. Until Jim gave a shiver and pulled his hand away. "It's bloody cold in this house." Jim got up from the chair and walked toward the boiler, switching on the heating and resumed sitting in the chair. Freddie just sat with wide eyes: he touched his husband. Finally, after all these years, he had gained contact with his lover.
Sophia was at school, and Jim had been unemployed since Freddie's passing, overcome with grief. Luckily, every ounce of Freddie's fortune had been left to him, aside from a quarter of a million to Roger, Brian and john, £200,000 each to Joe and Phoebe, who were also entitled to stay at the house but declined, offering Jim and Sophia some space. If Jim could count correctly, he didn't need a job until Sophia was 15 years old, with the amount of money Freddie had given him.
"If only you could see me, my darling." Freddie said to himself, eyes looking down miserably at the floor. But they looked up when he heard Jim gasp. The Irish was looking around the room frantically, as if he wasn't sure why he was there in the first place.
"..hello?" Jim spoke to the empty room, glancing out of the windows. "This is private property. This isn't a funny joke, now get off my land." Freddie was beside himself with shock. Had Jim just heard him?
"...Jimmy?" Freddie enquired, raising himself from his seat and moving closer to Jim. Jim looked terribly frightened as he spoke threats of calling the police to the desolate front garden. Freddie's eyes didn't leave Jim for a second as he persisted trying to communicate with his lover. Then, all of a sudden, Freddie began to glow.
