Freddie felt like crying. Well, partly. There was a tiny voice in his head that was slowly growing louder, urging him to scream senselessly into a pillow until he tired himself to sleep. Worthless, he thought, I'm already tired beyond human imagination.

If only his unborn son could realise that, and perhaps refrain from moving around so much he could be performing gymnastics at the olympics and still make less of a disturbance. Freddie rolled over in bed for the umpteenth time, squinting at the clock that was going so damn slow. 02:46.

Freddie let out a sigh louder than he had meant to make, and froze as he heard Jim grumble from beside him. Freddie was determined not to wake his husband - he'd done it last night, and the night before. It was purely by accident of course, which actually just made Freddie feel worse about doing it.

But alas, Jim had indeed woken up, and was tiredly checking over Freddie as he always did. "Oh sweetheart, is Luca keeping you up again? I thought he'd stop that by now, you're at the tail end of this whole thing." That was true, Freddie only had 10 weeks left of his pregnancy, which was quite daunting when he thought about it. Of course, he'd done it twice before, but the pain he experienced in labour is not something he could easily forget.

"Sorry for waking you." Freddie whispered, edging closer to his partner. Jim held out his arms for Freddie to settle himself into, and one of his gardening-worn hands came down to slide over the top of Freddie's silk pyjama top, resting on his stomach. Freddie's head flopped down to rest on Jim's shoulder, and the singer felt a small smile come to his lips at the familiarity of the position.

"Luca, you really must calm down, lad. Your daddy's trying to sleep. You did this last night." Jim said in a condescending tone, eyes trained on Freddie's bump.

"And the night before." Freddie pointed out exhaustedly, a yawn lingering in his throat. Jim nodded in sympathy, pressing his lips to Freddie's forehead as the singer let his heavy eyes flutter closed.

"Daddy needs a lot of energy to protect you, Luca, and you kicking around like that isn't helping, you understand?" Freddie felt a small foot press against him gently, as if Luca could tell he was in trouble and was saying sorry. It made him smile.

"Now you just settle down, lad. You can kick all you want later, when daddy's not tired anymore, but right now everyone's going to bed, so you will too." Jim gave Freddie's tummy little circular rubs as he lectured his child, satisfied when he no longer felt any feet or hands pushing against his palm.

With a glance to the side, Jim observed that Freddie had managed to drift off to sleep, comfortably settled in his partners arms, gentle fingers clutching Jim's shirt and his beautiful face tucked into Jim's neck. He could feel Freddie's slow, even breathing on his neck and collarbone.

Jim placed a kiss on Freddie's shoulder, still keeping one protective hand on the singer's rounded stomach. Slowly, Jim let himself surrender to the bliss of sleep once more, holding his husband and son close to him and dreaming of his family.
