Jim awoke to the smell of breakfast. He squinted at the clock. 08:23. He rolled over to check on Freddie, but the other side of the bed was empty and cold. Freddie never wakes up this early! Jim got out of bed and made a quick stop at the bathroom before he made his way downstairs.

He walked into the kitchen, expecting to find Joe cooking away as usual. It was safe to say he nearly had a heart attack when he saw Freddie standing in front of the stove, frying pieces of bacon with the dial way too high.

"Jesus, you'll burn the bloody house down!" Jim turned the dial down. Freddie rolled his eyes. "Good morning to you too."

"I'm serious Fred, that dial was way too high." Jim lectured. "Not only will you burn the bacon, but you'll burn your face off too. Joe shouldn't have let you in here alone."

Freddie was oddly quiet through Jim's rant. Normally he'd argue back, trying to convince Jim he was right. He just stared down at the bacon, absentmindedly sliding it across the pan with a plastic spatula. When Jim finally finished, Freddie looked near tears.

"Hey, I didn't mean to make you upset. I'm just trying to keep you safe." Jim put a hand on Freddie's waist.

"I'm sorry. I just wanted to do something special for you for once. I don't commit anything to this relationship. It's always you with the bright ideas and gestures. I just wanted you to know how much I love you."

Now Jim knew something was up. Freddie didn't meet Jim's eyes, he just let out a small sigh. "What's the matter? You never behave like this. Have I done something to upset you? I'm sorry if I did. I can leave you alone if you-"

"No! Please don't. Don't go." Freddie looked up then. He looked terrified. Jim was more puzzled than ever. Freddie suddenly surged forward and hugged Jim tightly. Jim hugged him back, of course, but asked what the matter was. "You'll think it's silly." Freddie mumbled, but Jim shook his head.

"When we were out to dinner yesterday, the waitress looked at you like you were the handsomest man in the world. Not to say you aren't, but it made me realise how much I take you for granted. You could have her, you could have anybody. Everyone wants a strong, polite gentleman to hold them at night. All I bring to the table is arguments. You deserve someone so much smarter and prettier and younger than me, and I want to let you go, but I can't, because I'm hopelessly in love with you. I have been since the moment I saw you. I don't want you to leave me. Not ever."

"Oh baby. Darling, I love you and you only. You're my baby. You don't just bring arguments my love. You're an amazing man, you've given me two beautiful little girls and a happy home. I admire and adore every little thing about you. I will never ever leave you, I want to be with you until the day I die."

"But you'll get tired of me, like everyone else." Freddie's eyes were innocent and round like a puppy's as he looked up at Jim.

"Never." Jim ran a hand through Freddie's short back hair. "You are mine, forever and ever. I promise baby."

The two men looked at each other, and got lost in each other's eyes. They weren't sure how long this eye contact lasted, but all of a sudden Freddie exclaimed, "THE BACON!" And whipped around to try and save the charred, tough pieces of meat. He finally slammed the spatula down on the pan defeated. Jim couldn't help but chuckle, as he picked Freddie up from behind and placed him on the counter.

"Listen you. I'll love you forever. Okay?"

"Okay. And I love you too." Freddie smiled. They locked lips, and laughed when their daughters came into the room and their eldest gagged playfully. Freddie loved his family, more than anything in the entire world. He couldn't picture himself with anyone else.
