You cut through your steak, cutting a morsel from it to pop into your mouth. As you begun to chew on your food, you peered up at the man sat opposite you and noticed his goofy smile as he looked towards you. You cocked an eyebrow at him, not knowing what was causing such a look. Once you swallowed your food, you tried to let out an awkward laugh, nervous by what caused his expression.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" You questioned, pushing a stray lock of hair behind your ear to stop it from falling into your face.

"I don't know. I just can't believe it," James shrugged. "I can't believe I got the first date, let alone a year."

Your cheeks became reddened at his comment. It had been a year since James Potter had asked you to be his girlfriend, hence why you were out for a fancy anniversary dinner. Although you weren't overly alike and had spent most of your school years at Hogwarts fighting, you had realised that you were more alike than you wanted to be. Once you actually accepted that you had a lot in common, a relationship bloomed and neither of you had ever looked back.

"Honestly if you asked me when we first met if I thought we'd be in a happy relationship, I probably would have told you where to shove it, but I am beyond happy that we have come this far."

James reached across the table to take your hand within his to offer you a warm squeeze.

"I liked you from the first moment I saw you, but I understand that I can be a bit of a dick, especially in school," he chuckled. "I did really think I had blown my chance with you and any chance of making us work would be a lost cause but clearly I was wrong."

"Lily thought I'd lost my mind when I told her that we were going out on a date, she thought I'd been forced into the date or just had no standards, but it did take quite a while before she accepted that I was very happy with you," you smiled.

James ran a hand through his messy dark hair, letting out a gentle laugh.

"Yeah, Sirius thought I'd made it up. No one believed me until you publicly told people that you had agreed to be my girlfriend."

"Well they all believe now."
