Being in a place where he didn't know anyone was something Evan had never experienced before. Well, at least until now. It was his first day at high school – Marwell High School.

Evan was nervous, but not as nervous as he would be if he was alone. As throughout his life, Angie was by his side now. Although she got on his nerves most of the time, no one could calm him down like she did.

"I'd look forward to finally not having girls around me whose main goal in life is to look good for their mates, but I'm starting to feel like I'm underdressed, and we're not even inside yet," Angie complained looking down at herself again, silently judging her outfit as she had already done at least a hundred times. According to Evan, she looked good, but his opinion obviously didn't count.

She sounded annoyed, but Evan knew her like the back of his hand, so he knew she was actually masking her nervousness. And when Angie was nervous, it was best to avoid her. Not the best strategy for the first day. If they didn't make friends right away, it would be harder later. Evan didn't often meet new people, but even he knew the basics.

"I'm telling you right now, we won't be outsiders." Evan decided to save the situation before it became irreversible. He knew he could have made friends on his own but having other friends who weren't also hers just didn't sound right.

"I expected you to want to be the outsider." Angie looked at him with a silly smile. She knew that Evan was anything but social, but she had no idea that he had his reasons for meeting new people.

"When I find human friends, I kill two birds with one stone - I'll have friends, and it'll annoy the hell out of my folks," he shared his plan with her. Angie reacted as he predicted. She let out a howl of amusement.

"Bulletproof arguments, let's get to it!"

---

There were not many students in the school as they were there an hour early. An orientation meeting was held an hour before class. At it, they should have received a map of the school, timetables, textbooks, and also a locker number so that they could put them there straight away.

Evan didn't think any of that would be a problem. As a wolf, he had a great sense of direction, and as he mentioned at the beginning, he also had Angie. He could only hope that he had as many subjects as possible with her.

Of course, he spoke too soon.

Right at the first ring of the bell, they had to divide, and they were separated not only by a few rooms but by an entire floor. Evan's enthusiasm waned slightly. Not that he didn't expect it to happen, but he didn't expect it so soon. With a deep sigh and one last look at the map, he headed towards the classroom.

He entered among the last, which meant that there were not many free seats left. Evan automatically chose the last one in the back since in no universe was he going to sit in the front. He sat down, watching the classmates around him out of the corner of his eye, thinking of suitable words to address them. Luckily for him, he didn't have to make the first move.

"Hey, I'm Aiden." The blond sitting in front of him turned around with a friendly smile. He seemed nice, so Evan decided to take the first chance to get to know someone and smiled back.

"Evan," he introduced himself briefly. They didn't have a chance to say more, as the teacher entered the classroom and the boy – Aiden – turned back. Even with such a short interaction, Evan was more than satisfied. It meant he'd be fine without Angie's help, and he already had one more person to look for in the next lessons.

"Good morning class, my name is Mr. Baker, and we are going to have science-based subjects together," the teacher introduced himself, leaning on the chair. Evan's first impression was that he seemed fine, but he knew that could change quickly as science was his worst subject. Literature was great, art was even better, and he could handle physical education, after all he was a wolf, but science? One big disaster. Evan thought of himself as talented, not smart. After all, all the subjects he was good at required more skill than knowledge. Ironically, he was quite good at math, it depended on the topic really.

Then came Evan's least favourite part - the introductions. He spent most of his life in North Hallson, where his pack made up a large part of the population. It was less than a 20-minute walk to school, so there were wolves in every grade, some teachers were wolves, and he met a lot of wolves on the way home. No introduction was necessary. Now it was different. Although he had only been at the school for an hour, the only wolves he had seen, or rather smelled, so far were him and Angie.

Lost in thought, Evan missed half the names of his new classmates. He already knew that he would try to hear them in conversations instead of asking them about them.

It was Aiden's turn, whose name he already knew, but he was curious about what he would say about himself. Evan hoped they could be friends and so hoped they would at least have something in common.

"Hi, my name's Aiden, and I'm from Marwell as well. I like science, so in this class, you'll probably think I'm a good student. We can pretend that I will make a good impression on you, and on subjects like math we'll pretend that we don't know each other, okay? I don't have many hobbies, I mostly read or watch series. If I have any hidden talents, they are also hidden from me. And that's about it," Aiden finished his description of himself.

Evan would be lying if he said he wasn't amused. Aiden sounded like someone he could definitely get along with. Plus, it sounded like they could write off each other's homework, which was never a bad thing.

Now it was Evan's turn. He slowly stood up, trying to maintain eye contact with his surroundings and not seem nervous at the same time. He didn't have time to think about what he wanted to say, so he had to rely on improvisation. And although he wasn't exactly the communicative type, his superpower was that he could talk his way out of anything.

"My name is Evan, I'm from North Hallson, and I wanted to see more than our small town, so I joined here. I'm more of a creative type than a studious one, so I'll rely on the effort being appreciated. I like to run, but you'd rather see me run for the bus than in physical education. And I don't like talking about myself, so I hope that's enough." He didn't wait for an answer and sat down straight away. Fortunately, his teacher didn't comment on that, and another student continued.

This time, Evan tried to listen carefully and not get lost in his head again. But honestly, even if he concentrated, he knew he couldn't remember so many names at once. He tried to match faces to individual names and remember some trivia about each individual that would help him to not forget them. Amanda kept pulling down her t-shirt even though she was wearing a crop top, Brian blinked more than was natural, and Shawn laughed at practically everything, even if it wasn't funny. Evan thought about how someone else would describe him, but he quickly realized that he had no idea. He had to ask Angie later what characterized him.

---

"You're an idiot." Angie didn't hesitate for a second.

"It takes one to know one," he shot back immediately. He had no idea why he thought it would be a good idea to ask her. Angie only gave him a normal answer when it was something serious enough. And this was apparently not the case.

"And you still love me," she didn't take it as an insult. She never did when it came to his comebacks.

It took exactly 2 hours before they finally had time to talk about their day. They both spent the first break looking for the next class, and as if on purpose, they didn't have another class together either. Finally, there was a break before the third lesson, and they finally saw each other.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah." He rolled his eyes at his best friend.

"Hey, Evan!" He quickly turned in the direction where his name came from. Aiden was approaching them, waving at his new classmate. Evan waved back at him before gesturing for him to join them. Angie gave him a surprised look.

Aiden was quick to join them, taking the empty seat next to Evan. He automatically turned to Angie to introduce himself, and she didn't hesitate to do the same. And suddenly, two friends became three. At least it looked that way, and Evan could only hope it would last.
