BELLA WOKE UP THREE DAYS LATER. Most of the family has returned to Forks except for Edward, Carlisle and Alice. Este had remained purely because she still felt at fault for what had happened even though everyone kept telling her that it would've happened to them all.

As soon as she woke up, doctors crowded around her. Renee was desperate to see her daughter at last. Este believed Renee was a lovely woman. Este had spoken to her a number of times and she was always very gracious. Of course she found it strange that Carlisle and Estella were so young and had still adopted five kids but everyone's mind usually went down the same pathway.

Este had to wait a little while while everyone fawned over Bella. She listened from outside the door to Edward slowly explaining what had happened. The story was simple. Bella had run away to Arizona, Carlisle and Edward had followed. On the way to see them, Bella had tripped resulting in her falling down two flights of stairs and then a window. Alice had made this believable. After that, Este and Alice had come to make sure everything was alright.

Bella knew the truth of course but while Renee and the doctors were pacing around, they had to keep to the story. Edward barely left her side, holding her hand and continuously asking her how she felt. Bella just kept saying she was fine. She hated fuss, she also hated hospitals. Este was aware of this.

It had taken a while, maybe six hours, in which time Bella had slept again and woken even more confused than the first time. Renee had gone to drop her bags off back at her house as she'd come to the hospital straight from the airport. That's when Edward had walked out of the room and looked to Este who was standing perfectly still with her back to the wall.

He nodded at her, turning to smile at Bella before he walked off to go and find Carlisle. Este was surprised by the level of faith that he still had in her. Este knew that Bella was perfectly safe but she had expected that Edward would still refuse to leave her side.

Este took a deep breath before she turned and walked into the hospital room. Bella was sat up, propped with several white pillows. There was a book in her hands but she put it down as soon as Estella walked in. Her eyes widened slightly in surprise but she didn't seem scared.

Este's eyes immediately went to her forearm. It was hard to notice against the paleness of her skin, easily could be mistaken for something else but she knew exactly what it was. The crescent scar. She had the same on the side of her neck. It didn't stand out in the whiteness of her complexion but it was there. They didn't go away, Bella was going to have that forever.

Bella seemed to notice Este's staring, she moved her hand instinctively over the scar.

"How are you feeling?" Este asked as calm as she could manage as she took the seat next to Bella's bed.

"I'm fine" she said sternly, "they've got me on a bunch of morphine so... I can't really feel the pain"

"That's good" Este smiled, "Bella I could not be more sorry for what happened and I swear to you it'll never, never happen again. I should've been more careful... I was supposed to be protecting you and you trusted me to do so... I can't imagine what you must think of me"
