WHEN BELLA HAD TOLD ALICE THAT she didn't want anything over the top for her birthday it was clear that Alice found a different meaning in her words. Bella had been nervous about the celebration all day. Este had heard her constantly asking Edward what was going to happen when she got to the Cullens house.

Este felt rather bad for her. Of course she personally didn't understand this deep thing that Bella evidently had against birthdays but it was clear that she'd love nothing more than to pretend she was still seventeen and stay home watching movies with Edward rather than being dragged into whatever Alice had in store for her.

But at the same time, it was only an hour maybe a bit more. Alice had been so excited about it all that Este had started to see that turning eighteen probably was a big thing that deserved to be celebrated. Este couldn't remember being eighteen but she was aware that there'd been a celebration.

Alice had dragged them all into it with presents and decorations and dresses. Este felt everything was slightly too formal for what Bella was expecting. Alice had ran off to go get her in her dress of purple silk leaving Rosalie with her arms folded bitterly about being there, Jasper holding his breath so much that he looked like a statue and Carlisle and Emmett talking lazily about the news.

Este was rearranging the presents on the table. There were only four of them but the way that Alice had decorated the table made it look crowded. She was wearing a dull blue dress decorated in silver flowers, Alice's choice. They all looked as perfect as usual, especially Rosalie.

Alice had covered every flat surface with pink candles and dozens of crystal bowls filled with hundreds of roses. There was a table with a white cloth draped over it next to Edward's grand piano, holding a pink birthday cake, more roses, a stack of glass plates, and the small pile of silver-wrapped presents.

It was ten minutes later when Alice returned, Bella's arm in hand. She'd forced the girl to dress up for the occasion. Bella was wearing a dress of moss green with black lace patterned over it. She looked very sweet but also immediately horrified by the sight in front of her. Edward wasn't far behind, looking bemused as Bella's gaze landed on the decoration.

Edward seemed to sense Bella's distress. As they made it to the bottom of the stairs he placed his touch over her back and kissed the top of her head gently. Bella calmed down ever so slightly, her heart rate calming.

"Happy birthday Bella!" Este smiled, "you're only eighteen once!"

"Hmph" Rosalie rolled her eyes. She'd in fact been eighteen for a near century.

Este moved forwards and hugged Bella carefully, her soft, dark hair brushing against Bella's cheek as she kissed her forehead. Edward didn't flinch even for a second. The amount of faith he had in his mother was enough to relax Este almost completely. Anyway, her eyes were too light to be worrying about blood.
