THE DRIVE FROM WASHINGTON TO New York was ridiculously long. Humans probably wouldn't have been able to do it in one sitting and neither could their cars. Every so often there was the obligatory stop for gas. It happened twice on the two day journey.

Este and Carlisle didn't say anything and Este found this incredibly weird. She wasn't sure whether he was simply remaining silent because she was or whether there was something else going on in his mind. Of course Este overthought everything which meant she strayed from the obvious. In reality she knew they were both tired and upset about missing Forks, still feeling disconnected from the one sided argument and unsure how to phrase any new found words.

She was grateful when they arrived in Ithaca. Alice and Jasper wouldn't be moving in for another two days. In the meantime they were staying in their Colorado cottage. Este knew that they would've loved to stay there but neither felt right about being away from the family even if Rose and Emmett were somewhere in Michigan far from the drama.

As for Edward, Este was still unsure where he was. She presumed that Carlisle didn't know either. Her presumption was that Carlisle hadn't spoken to either Edward nor Alice or Jasper. Not since he'd stormed out into the night. Este wasn't sure when she would next talk to him. The idea of eternity assured her that he couldn't stay away forever yet Este was well aware that it could still be a ridiculously long time.

She had followed Carlisle's Mercedes the entire way, pulling into a car park which sat in front of a large block of apartments. It was nice enough to look at. Tall and cream with ivy lacing one side. The door was a soft ochre and the grey clouds above reminded her of Forks.

There would be more sun in the east but Este supposed they'd have to deal with that later. At the current time there was no need for them to do anything but she knew Carlisle would go crazy if he couldn't work. It wouldn't be long until he found himself a job in a hospital, he had more than enough qualifications. For Este it would be more difficult, she was unsure whether it was even worth trying.

Este let Carlisle sort everything out while she sat staring blankly out the front of her window, watching the world go by. There was a small speck of bright blue sky in the distance, shielded by clouds ever so slightly. A family walked past. The mother with a toddler on her hip, the father pushing a stroller. Este felt dazed.

She heard the trunk of Carlisle's car open and turned to see him taking boxes out. It would take them hours to lug everything upstairs and then it wouldn't be long until they had to take it all away again. Este was unsure whether she could be bothered to unpack. But she couldn't leave her belongings in her car.

Este wished there had been no one around so they could move to the best of their ability. Even now, Carlisle took three boxes stacked one on the other precariously. He could've taken more even if it would seem ridiculous to humans.
