The Chaos Curse

"Before that..."
Chaos gestured to my arm, she looked up just barely in order to do so, and I could see the raw guilt in her eyes. She looked to be in pain just by seeing my arm. I listened and unwrapped the bloodied bandages.

I didn't realize it before, but now I was aware of how much agony I actually was in. Lifting it seemed to be a chore, and using my fingers evoked a pain that radiated up to my elbow like no other. A stinging sensation and throbbing started in my fingers. I tried not to make any noise, but I felt the tears welling in my eyes, and I bit my trembling lip to smother any noises.

It made me remember all the times Chaos would get hurt and the pain she was in, and yet she did not yelp or weep in pain, not like she did today. I wonder if it really hurt her, or if she was only trying to seem brave in front of me, would she tell me if she was suffering?

She took my arm and licked the wound, lapping up the blood that had gathered and stained my skin. The sensation made me shiver, but I wasn't sure if it was due to the pain or her tongue.

The bleeding stopped, but the pain remained for a few seconds- once Chaos removed her mouth, it began to fade away like magic. If I closed my eyes, I could fully convince myself I was uninjured. How did she do that?

Chaos reached into her pants pocket and produced a potion vial similar to the one she had stashed earlier this week after the sorceress's trial. I remembered briefly when she admitted to only carrying those for me.

I wish she would use them on herself; her finger was still bleeding- albeit abnormally slow. She opened and poured its contents onto the wound, and it did not hurt as she did so.

It worked quickly, knitting my muscles back together and closing the deep cuts until all that was left was a redness which also eventually faded.

The silence returned tenfold; Chaos pocketed the vial again as she did last time and licked her injured finger. Her injury followed suit, closing up miraculously fast; she did not bleed as much due to the dark consistency of her blood.

The stillness, while anticipatory, was tranquil. It was so serene that it seemed ripe for ruin, which was to be expected if we were to delve into Chaos' past. Of course, I had asked about the diagnosis, but the cause was likely the most critical factor in deciphering the reason for Chaos' illness. I remember she told me that her pain was internal.

I decided to speak first to encourage her. "Chaos?"

She sighed, scratched the back of her scalp and returned her fingers to clasping one another. Her eyes refused to meet mine, and stared aimlessly at the wooden floor panels.

"Lucille, my diagnosis is likely PTSD, ASPD, and... DID."

"What's DID? What's ASPD?"
"ASPD is the official term for a psychopath. And DID stands for... Dissociative Identity Disorder or Multiple Personality Disorder." She explained.

Multiple personalities...? What?
What does that mean? She... Does Chaos have another identity? Like another person inside of her? Where is this coming from?

"It would be better to explain how I know this if you understand how this happened." She watched her fingers cross and close around each other; her eyes were grey and no longer a glimmering blade.

"I guess I did promise to show you my memories eventually..."
She smiled but seeing her do so made my heart ache for some reason.

"You know about my mother and my abduction, how Ruby was involved. It was set up by a member of the Siumerian Royal Family to get rid of competition to the ascension of the throne."

"Instead of killing me, Primrose used me for her experimentation; she wanted to produce hybrids, a species of two. A vampire and a demon are the most likely combination because of their similarities. Still, in order to do so... you have to force the body to recognize the need for both genes, that the environment is not hospitable to just demonkind and necessary to project vampire lineage."
