MARTA SAT WITH PEGGY AND Steve in the medical ward of the base. Steve and Marta were getting their blood drawn, while Thomas helped Howard clean up the mess in the lab. Marta had changed into her original uniform, but she had left her longer hair down. Steve was given army clothing to fit his new body.
Steve had stopped the man (who was a Hydra agent) from escaping in a submarine, but he had commited suicide before he could be apprehended. Both super-soldiers were deeply saddened by the death of Dr. Erskine, Steve feeling his death a little more than Marta.
"Think you got enough?" Steve asked solemnly as the nurse took the needle out of his arm first, and Marta's second.
"Any hope of reproducing the program is locked in both of your genetic codes. But without Dr. Erskine, it would take years." Peggy said, handing Marta a pin for her hair when she noticed Marta fumbling with it. She took it with a small smile.
Steve sighed. "He deserved more than this."
"If it could work only twice, he'd be proud it was you two." Peggy said, papers in her hand.
The three heard the conversation of Senator Brandt, Colonel Phillips, and Howard, and mutally decided to check it out. Peggy led the way down the stairs, followed by Marta, with Steve towing behind. Marta was surprised to see Thomas and Howard working on the Hydra submarine together.
"Hydra is the Nazi deep-science division. It's led by Johann Schmidt. But he has much bigger ambitions." Peggy interjected, walking closer to the men.
Phillips took over. "Hydra is practically a cult. They worship Schmidt. They think he's invincible."
"So, what are you going to do about it?" The senator asked.
Phillips began walking in another direction. "I spoke to the President this morning. As of today, the SSR is being retasked." He said, stopping in front of Peggy, Marta and Steve.
"Colonel?" Marta asked, confused.
"We are taking the fight to Hydra. Pack your bags, Agent Carter. You too, Stark. For the hell of it, bring Haskett with you. We're flying to London tonight." Steve and Marta made eye contact, equally confused. They were
super-soldiers. Marta's job was to train Steve, and then stay with the SSR until the war ended.Steve spoke up before Marta could. "Sir? If you're going after Schmidt, we want in." He gestured to Marta as he spoke. Marta walked to stand beside him.
"You two are experiments. You're going to Alamogordo, Rogers. Barnes, you're heading back to your base in Baltimore." Colonel Phillips said.
Marta furrowed her brows. "The serum worked. I trained all of your recruits very well, when that's not my exact area of expertise." She brought up, crossing her arms.
"I asked for an army and all I got was Rogers." Phillips turned to Marta. "I didn't even ask for you, Barnes. You're not a soldier. Don't try to be one. You two are not enough." He began walking off, leaving to dejected soldiers behind.
Senator Brandt walked over to stand in front of Steve and Marta. But he didn't spare Marta a glance."With all due respect to the Colonel, I we think we may be missing the point. I've seen you in action, Steve. More importantly, the country's seen it. Paper." A man handed Senator Brandt a newspaper, and plastered on the front of it was a picture of Steve saving a child from the Hydra agent.
"The enlistment lines have been around the block since your picture hit the newsstands. You don't take a soldier, a symbol like that, and hide him in a lab," Brandt took Steve by the shoulder and started leading him away. Peggy looked at Marta, seeing her fuming. "Son, do you want to serve your country on the most important battlefield of the war?" He finished, stopping his and Steve's movements.
"Sir, that's all I want." Steve said, glancing at Marta, who was rubbing the bridge of her nose in frustration.
Brandt stuck his hand out. "Then, congratulations. You just got promoted." Steve shook the senator's hand exitedly.
As the senator began to walk away after making a few arrangements, Marta stopped him. Steve and Peggy waited with bated breath. "Sir, what about me?" She asked, stepping in front of the senator.
"What about you?" Brandt said, attempting to brush her off.
Marta scoffed. "Sir, I am now a super-soldier, same as Steve. I've been a part of the armed forces for almost six years, meaning I have tactical skills that others in the SSR do not have. I'm not telling you to put me as a headline for the war, because that's not possible, but I'm telling you not to ship me back to my base." She said. Peggy smirked at the words her friend was speaking. She had been waiting her whole life to hear a woman other than herself stand up and push back.
Senator Brandt was quiet for a few seconds, mewing over Marta's words until he came to a conclusion. "I think I have the perfect job for you, Lieutenant. One that will fit you very well."
The job was not what Marta had hoped. Steve's job was not what he had hoped. Both Marta and Steve had always wished to do more than what they could, and they were disappointed that they had to wait even longer.
