"NO, IT WASN'T OBVIOUS. WHY me?" Marta said, blue eyes still wide in shock. She was being completely bombarded, and she had no idea what was going on, or why she was even selected.
Dr. Erskine sighed. "Lieutenant, we needed another subject. Someone completely different to Mr. Rogers. You are a woman, he is a man. You are a sister, he is not, therefore you have different protection protocals. You have different genes, different brains. Colonel Phillips, for once, agrees with me. You are the perfect choice." As he spoke, Marta's harsh gaze didn't soften. Sure, she would have considered doing this with Steve, but she wasn't prepared, and she had no idea how this would affect her flying.
"You'll still be able to fly and train
Mr. Haskett, Marta. You are now just a part of Project Rebirth." Peggy said, placing a hand on Marta's shoulder for comfort.Peggy dropped her hold on Marta as Thomas spoke. "How cool would it be for you to not only be the first female pilot in the Aeronautical Division, but also one of the first super-soldiers in the world? Serious bragging rights for both of us." He teased.
Marta rolled her eyes, slight smile on her face. She looked at the Doctor again, who nodded. "It is up to you. I will not let any harm become to you." He said, and Marta believed him.
The blonde woman sighed. There was no genuine reason for her to say no. This is how she would help people. This is how her life would change. "Can't let you have all the fun, Steve." She said, rubbing her neck. "Let's do it, I guess."
Steve, who was ready for the procedure, wasn't exactly comfortable with Marta doing it as well, but he trusted Marta's judgement, and he believed in her. "You sure about this, Mar?" He asked, climbing into his machine.
Marta shrugged, shaking her hands out. "Ask me later?" She said, turning to Peggy, who was smiling. "What should I do?"
"Take off your shirt and tie and put on this undershirt, and change your skirt into pants. You can go to that room right there." She said, handing Marta the clothes and leading her to a small powder room. Marta took the clothes and walked into the room, locking the door behind her.
She pulled off her skirt and shirt, pulling on the white shirt and army green pants. Her hair, which was done in a sharp bun would probably irritate her, so she fixed it to be a simple ponytail. Marta gave herself the once over and exited the powder room, handing her old clothes to a lab assistant.
Thomas was talking to Peggy, and Dr. Erskine was waiting for Marta over near the unoccupied machine. He gestured for Marta to get in, and she did, laying down. "Are you nervous?" The doctor asked, warm smile on his face.
Marta nodded, fingers fidgeting as often did when she was nervous. "Mostly for Steve, he's been waiting for this his whole life." She answered, stealing a glance at her best friend.
Dr. Erskine smirked. "He's been waiting for you his whole life," Marta raised her eyebrows, and Dr. Erskine lightly chuckled. "I've had many conversations with him. You mean a great deal to that man, my dear." He said, patting Marta's arm affectionally and walking away.
