He had remained living in his Washington D.C. apartment after Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D fell, but he quickly made his way to the Avengers Tower in New York with Sam Wilson beside him. "She's alive, Sam. They found her." Steve said, in disbelief that it was actually true.
"Did Stark give you any details? Where she was found, if she's okay?" Sam asked. He had heard stories of the infamous Marta Barnes, and had seen photographs of her from Steve.
Steve shook his head. "He just said that he found her, and to come to the Tower." He explained. Marta was alive. Steve had been wishing for this moment for nearly three years, and he was finally going to see her again.
The two friends walked into the Avengers Tower, immediately moving to the tenth floor where Tony told them to go. In the hallway was Nick Fury, waiting outside of a door. "Gentlemen. You made good time." Nick said, sending a nod in greeting to Sam. The finding of Marta Barnes was cause for the former Director to head back to Manhattan and check out the situation himself.
"Where is she, Nick?" Steve asked quickly. He wasn't in the mood for small talk.
"He's a little excited." Sam said in an effort to break the tension in the hallway. This floor was the medical floor, and it seemed that everyone was wherever Marta was.
Nick shrugged. "Well, it's been seventy years. Follow me." He led Steve and Sam to a room with a large glass window, where Bruce Banner, Tony Stark and other doctors could be seen working on a woman with skin as white as the snow she was covered in when she was found.
Steve's breath hitched in his throat when he saw her. She was hooked up to many devices, and she was unconscious, but she was there, and she was real. Marta was truly alive. The uniform Marta was wearing in 1945 had been removed from her body, and she was instead wearing grey pants and a grey shirt. Her blonde hair was sprawled across the bed she laid on, and Steve knew that wasn't her attire when they went in the ice. "Where did they find her?" Steve asked, his eyes glued to Marta.
"Very deep in the Artic Ocean." Fury answered. Steve frowned. He knew something was wrong.
Sam noticed his friend's expression. "What is it?" He asked.
"That's not where her plane was. That's not was she was wearing, and she didn't have that scar on her head." Steve said, knowing in his gut that something happened to Marta. He just didn't know what.
Tony and Bruce left the room a moment later, moving into the hallway to inform the three of all that they knew. "A reunion is clearly on the schedule when Barnes wakes up." Tony said, and Steve rolled his eyes.
"What the hell happened to her?" Steve demanded, stepping closer to Tony. He was in no mood for jokes.
"Steve," Bruce began, taking his glass off of his face. "her shirt has the Hydra symbol on it. Our best guess is that they took her and put her back in the ice when they were done with her. They wanted us to find her, clearly." The doctor explained, and Steve sighed.
The blonde glanced at the sleeping woman, relieved to see her chest rising and falling at a steady pace. "Hydra. Do we know if they did anything to her?" He questioned. Steve didn't know what he would do if she didn't remember him, like Bucky.
