Marta's eyes flickered open slowly as she felt the absence of Steve's grip and his body altogether in their bed. "Where are you going?" Marta mumbled sleepily, deciding not to move just yet.
Steve pulled on an athletic shirt. "Running. I'll be back soon. Go to sleep." he whispered, pressing a kiss to Marta's shoulder, covering her up and leaving their room. Steve went for a run early every morning. Some days he woke Marta, other days he didn't.
Marta went back to sleep, waking up again when she heard the shower running, and then when she felt the bed dip beside her. Marta smiled as Steve pulled her hair from her shoulders, arranging it behind her back. "That was quick." she said, allowing Steve to encase her in his grip once more.
"I couldn't leave my beautiful wife for too long." Steve said, placing a kiss on Marta's exposed neck, a light smile remaining on her face.
Marta turned to face Steve, placing her head on his chest, her left hand catching her eye. "It's perfect." she spoke of Sarah Rogers's wedding ring.
Steve nodded, glancing at the wedding band he wore on his left hand. It once belonged to Marta's father. "My mom always wanted you to wear her ring. She told me all the time." Steve said quietly, reminiscing over his time with his mother, the woman who raised both him and the three Barnes children while Winnifred was unable to.
"Well, I'm glad I can make her happy." Marta spoke. There was a time in her life where Marta wasn't sure she would ever speak to Steve again, let alone marry him. But she knew, deep down, that there was no way she wouldn't marry Steve.
Their wedding was perfect. It was just them, in the small church in Brooklyn they had grown up going to. If they had planned the event, Marta and Steve would have brought their team and what remained of their family to enjoy their union together, but that wasn't what had happened. They were only in Brooklyn to visit their family's graves, and then Marta saw the church. By the time they were back at the Compound, they were married. It was calm and peaceful, like Marta always dreamed her life with Steve would be.
Steve smiled, tucking Marta's hair behind her ears. "Rumlow's on the move. Nat found out he's leaving Sweden. Wherever he's going next, we're going after him." Steve said, speaking of the Hydra agent that had been causing global trouble since S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra fell a few weeks before Marta was defrosted. Rumlow and his crew were the last remains of Hydra.
Marta had been activated four times in the year since Sokovia was destroyed. The team knew it was Rumlow, and they were getting desperate to find him. But Marta sometimes got annoyed with him constantly talking about work. There were times when she just wanted Steve to be quiet, and there were quite a few easy ways for her accomplish that.
Rolling her eyes, Marta swung herself onto Steve's body completely, planting her lips on his to stop him from talking. Steve knew exactly what Marta was doing, and he didn't dare go against her wishes. Wrapping his arms tightly around Marta's waist and pulling her to him, Steve kissed his wife back with full intensity. Marta pulled away, reaching up to push Steve's hair from his eyes. "No talking about work this early." Marta said with a smile, removing herself from Steve's chest.
Their life was as calm as it could ever be. Marta was finally out of the dark pit she had been pushed into with full force, and she was able to deal with the deaths of loved ones she could not save. She had accepted Andy's death, and she knew Bucky wasn't ever coming back, so she moved on. Pietro's death was still fresh, but Marta focused on helping Wanda heal. Peggy was doing alright, and Marta and Steve visited both her and Emily Haskett regularly.
