September 8th

When we finished we watched as the water slowly flooded the room. It was slowing down and almost seemed to come to a stop but we knew that this room and the entire back end of the house would be affected the most.

"Is the house on a slant?" I panted, glancing over at Kai.

He shrugged, his eyes slightly shaking from the adrenaline. "I don't fucking know," he mumbled as he ran his fingers through his soaked and stringy hair. "Fuck."

I watched as he splashed through the room and out the door.

Some of the smaller paintings were ruined. There wasn't much he could do to save them either because as soon as the water started, they slipped and fell under. Some of the others ended up falling over and ended with the same fate and the only ones with minor damage, that weren't already set on a table or above ground, had water stains across the bottoms. I don't know if that means they're as good as done but from Kai's reaction, I'm guessing so.

Even tho they were ruined, they were still beautiful. I don't know if that's because I have untrained eyes or maybe I'm slightly biased but I've never seen paintings as emotional as those. I would like to be shocked, but I can't be. Even though Kai is 'known', I guess, for being 'emotionless', he has shown to have a wide range of emotions. He just doesn't like to feel them. I think he shows that with his art. He puts everything he has into them and just the thought of that, losing such beautiful and moving work due to something that wasn't predicted to happen, is crushing.

"I should've put them up...I should've put them all up!"

I watched as Kai paced across the length of the living room, the carpet making a squashing sound as he stepped over it. "Why the fuck would I set them on the floor like that? Like they meant nothing!"

I watched as his breathing remained short and stifled, his eyes shaking with something deranged. He was panicking.

"Kai..." I stepped forward before stopping myself. My presence isn't going to calm him down. I'm not even sure speaking to him will make it better but doing nothing isn't going to help him either. "It's not your fault, you didn't know—"

"But I could've...I should've fucking cared more!" He let out a breath that sounded as if it was his last one. "If I had cared more...if I had tried fucking harder!" His voiced boomed through the room as he held his chest, his body finally stopping as he stood still.

"It's over." He whispered, his voice shaking. He hunched over, his hand still gripping his chest tight enough to crease his soaked clothing. "It's all gone...You're gone."
